Job summary

Grand Home Furnishings in Roanoke, Virginia, seeks an experienced Director of Human Resources & Benefits to lead our people strategy and benefits programs. You will partner with owners, management, and employees to manage HR, compensation, retirement plans, and compliance, reporting to the CFO.

The role drives HR strategy, employee relations, compliance, engagement, and payroll oversight across 18 stores, ensuring policy adherence and business alignment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required; professional HR certification preferred (e.g., SHRM-CP/SCP, PHR/SPHR).
  • 6–8 years of progressive HR experience in benefits, retirement plan, compensation, and workers’ compensation roles.
  • Proficiency with federal and state labor law for VA, WV, and TN, employee relations, leaves of absence, workers’ compensation, and OSHA logs.
  • Strong conflict management, interpersonal, counseling, and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; hands-on experience with an HRIS system.

Responsibilities

  • Advise owners and leaders on HR functions such as hiring needs, leaves of absence, compensation, benefits, retirement plan, unemployment, workers’ compensation, and all aspects of the employee life cycle and its relation to the company’s business model.
  • Leads education, communication, and support of HR initiatives; drives management performance through HR practices and counseling; ensures adherence to policies and employment laws.
  • Manage resolution of employee relations concerns to ensure fair, consistent resolution per policy and values.
  • Train managers on HR compliance issues including FMLA, Workers’ Compensation, disciplinary process, terminations, harassment, and unemployment.
  • Facilitate succession planning and internal promotions; partner with owners and leadership on company projects.
  • Oversee HR department staff and payroll; plan for future departmental capacity and HR systems.
  • Develop and maintain HR documentation, including Employee Handbook, Safety Program Handbook, and ATS posting formats.

We’re now seeking an experienced HR leader to join us as our next Director of Human Resources & Benefits, guiding our people strategy and benefits programs.

The Director of Human Resources & Benefits works closely with owners, management, and employees to advise on and manage key Human Resources, Group Benefits, Compensation, Retirement Plan, Unemployment, and Workers’ Compensation processes. This role often requires handling sensitive information, partnering through difficult situations, helping facilitate change, and coaching leaders and employees across the organization.

This position assesses and anticipates HR-related needs and works closely with owners and management to develop integrated solutions, maintaining an effective level of business literacy to support company leaders in requisite conversations and problem solving. This position also oversees the company’s HR systems, compliance documentation, employee engagement programs, and sales award programs.

This position reports to the CFO.

What You’ll Do
HR Strategy & Employee Relations
  • Assists company owners and company leaders in navigating functional aspects of HR such as hiring needs, leaves of absence, compensation, benefits, retirement plan, unemployment, workers’ compensation, and all aspects of the employee life cycle and its relation to the company’s business model.
  • Leads the education, communication, and support of HR initiatives by partnering with company owners, executives, and management; drives management performance through HR practices and counseling and assists with management changes where necessary; ensures adherence to company policies and all employment laws and regulations.
  • Manages resolution of employee relations concerns to ensure fair, consistent, and proper resolution in consideration of company policy, procedures, and values.
  • Trains managers on HR compliance issues, including FMLA, Workers’ Compensation, disciplinary process, terminations, harassment, and unemployment.
  • Facilitates succession planning and promotion opportunities from within the organization.
  • Partners with owners and other members of leadership on company projects, as assigned.
  • Leads, mentors, and develops HR department staff, providing direct oversight to payroll and HR support personnel and planning for future departmental capacity.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Maintains and administers the company compensation plan, ensuring equitable and fair pay throughout the organization and protecting the company against unfair and discriminatory pay claims; creates, disseminates, and manages the payroll budget throughout the organization.
  • Partners with HR vendors to ensure accuracy and efficient administration of all group benefits, the retirement plan, workers’ compensation, and payroll processes.
  • Manages formal disputes involving the company retirement plan, coordinating with the plan’s third-party administrator.
  • Maintains overall accountability for company-wide payroll accuracy, compliance, and timeliness, directing and auditing end-to-end processing.
Workers’ Compensation & Leave Management
  • Oversees the Workers’ Compensation program, including entering and managing all work comp claims.
  • Manages FMLA administration.
Compliance & Documentation
  • Develops and maintains CDL driver compliance documentation, including drug and alcohol policy, FMCSA addendum, post-accident training, SAP referral processes, and driver qualification files, in coordination with outside counsel and the designated TPA.
  • Maintains drug/alcohol policy structure across general, safety-sensitive, and CDL employee tiers.
  • Authors and maintains the Employee Handbook and Safety Program Handbook, including policy structure, formatting, and revisions.
  • Responsible for all HR files maintained on the company intranet.
  • Maintains a standardized job description and ATS posting format across all company departments, ensuring consistency in structure, titles, and reporting lines.
Employee Engagement & Recognition
  • Manages the President’s Club and Platinum Club sales award programs.
  • Coordinates employee engagement events and activities, including holiday luncheons, retirement parties, and other company celebrations.
What We’re Looking For
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of experience and education pertaining to the assigned duties required; professional HR certification (e.g., SHRM-CP/SCP, PHR/SPHR) preferred.
  • 6-8 years of experience in progressive HR, benefits, retirement plan, compensation, and workers’ compensation roles.
  • Proficiency with federal and state labor law for VA, WV, and TN, employee relations, leaves of absence, workers’ compensation, and OSHA logs.
  • Strong conflict management, interpersonal, counseling, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Must have hands-on experience working within an HRIS system.
What You’ll Earn
