Job summary

The City of Tallahassee is seeking a strategic leader to direct centralized accounting and financial reporting for the Financial Services Department. Qualifications

• Extensive experience in governmental accounting and financial reporting, including managing a centralized accounting function and supervising professional staff, preferably in a local government.
• Strong working knowledge of GAAP, GASB standards, governmental fund accounting, and government-wide reporting, with the ability to interpret requirements and apply them to real situations.
• Experience leading or coordinating month-end and year-end close activities, preparing an ACFR, and managing the external audit process.
• Ability to organize work around firm deadlines, establish clear responsibilities, identify reporting or control issues early, and follow them through to resolution.
• A track record of developing staff, setting clear expectations, and building a team culture grounded in accountability and continuous improvement.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to anticipate issues and safeguard the accuracy of financial records.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain complex financial matters to department leaders, executive leadership, and staff and to work effectively with external auditors.
• Ability to build effective working relationships across City departments with a collaborative and service-oriented approach.

Responsibilities

• Direct the City’s centralized accounting operations, setting priorities and leading staff to deliver accurate, timely general ledger, fund accounting, and month-end and year-end close processes.
• Serve as the primary liaison to external auditors, directing the annual audit and the preparation of four ACFRs for the City and associated entities.
• Lead the implementation of new GASB pronouncements, evaluating their impact and ensuring compliance in financial statement preparation.
• Oversee investment and bank reconciliations and direct the integration of internal and external data into the general ledger, strengthening controls and reporting accuracy.
• Provide centralized accounting guidance to departments citywide, resolving complex accounting questions and promoting consistent practices.
• Continuously identify improvements to accounting processes, systems and internal controls, and lead and develop a team of professional accounting staff.
