Director of Finance and Administration

Location: Missoula, MT (Remote work available, must be a Montana resident)
Reports to: Executive Director
Status: Full-time, Exempt
Salary Range: $100,000 – $120,000, commensurate with experience
Start Date: Summer 2025

Accelerate Montana is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Missoula, Montana. Accelerate consists of a number of programs dedicated to advancing workforce and economic development across the state of Montana.

Key Responsibilities:

The Director of Finance and Administration is a key member of the leadership team responsible for stewarding the financial, administrative, and compliance infrastructure of the organization. Reporting to the Executive Director, this position will oversee the organization’s finance systems, budgeting process, federal grant compliance, HR compliance, and risk management strategies. This role is ideal for a mission-driven, detail-oriented professional with deep nonprofit finance experience who thrives in a fast-paced and evolving environment.

Finance & Accounting

  • Proven experience managing the quality and content of all financial and accounting data, reporting, and coordinating audits for an organization or significant department/program.
  • Oversee accounting systems, internal controls, and audits in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit best practices
  • Produce board-ready financial reports and direct strategic financial planning in collaboration with the Executive Director
  • Support staff responsible for day-to-day finance and accounting tasks, budget updates, and accounting system management

Grants & Fiscal Sponsorship

  • Ensure timely, accurate grant reporting and expense tracking
  • Support implementation of fiscal sponsorship agreements, reporting, and tracking
  • Monitor restricted funding and program allocations
  • Manage compliance with OMB Uniform Guidance and other federal grant requirements

HR & Legal Compliance

  • Oversee HR compliance systems in partnership with external counsel or consultants
  • Maintain policies and practices that align with employment law and nonprofit best practices
  • Support staff responsible for onboarding, benefit administration, and personnel file management
  • Monitor legal compliance areas related to nonprofit governance and operations
  • Possess an enterprise risk mindset with the ability to identify risks and subsequent risk management options and procedures
  • Demonstrated and proficient understanding of contracts management and compliance

Technology & Systems

  • Ensure effective use of finance, HR, and project management collaboration tools, including QuickBooks Online, Emburse, Quadient,
    Monday.com, Salesforce, and Slack
  • Support staff responsible for training on internal systems and tools

Enterprise Risk & Governance

  • Identify and mitigate organizational risks across financial, HR, and operational domains
  • Collaborate on internal controls, insurance, data security, and policy development
  • Prepare materials for board meetings and serve as staff liaison for financial governance and related committees

Qualifications

  • At least 5–7 years of progressively responsible nonprofit finance and administration experience
  • Experience managing finances and fiscal strategy for a $5M+ organization
  • Deep understanding of OMB Uniform Guidance and federal grant compliance
  • Familiarity with nonprofit fiscal sponsorship models (or willingness to learn)
  • Strong working knowledge of nonprofit HR, compliance, and legal obligations
  • Proficiency QuickBooks Online or similar systems (experience with Salesforce, Monday.com, Emburse, and/or Quadient a plus)
  • Experience supervising staff or managing cross-functional teams
  • Excellent judgment, attention to detail, and ability to effectively manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Commitment to problem solving, innovation, and mission-driven work
