Harnham seeks a Director of Engineering to lead and grow an ambitious engineering organization in Cambridge, MA. The role combines hands-on coding with strategic leadership to align product delivery with business goals.

You will shape backend architecture, cloud infrastructure, and CI/CD practices while mentoring a team through rapid growth. Hybrid working and equity opportunities are part of the package.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience.
• 5+ years of engineering leadership experience.
• 3+ years directly managing engineering teams – ideally 8+ people.
• Strong hands-on development background with recent coding.
• Expertise with Python, React, and cloud platforms (AWS and/or GCP).
• Experience building and scaling distributed, cloud-native systems.
• Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, deployment, and运营.
• Proven track record delivering in startup or high-growth environments.

$250,000 - $270,000 base salary + annual bonus + equity

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing engineering team while fostering a strong culture of accountability and collaboration.
• Own engineering delivery, including sprint planning, backlog management, execution, and cross-functional coordination.
• Partner closely with Product, Engineering, and executive leadership to align technical priorities with business goals.
• Architect, build, and scale backend systems, applications, and cloud infrastructure supporting a growing platform.
• Establish engineering best practices across CI/CD, testing, observability, reliability, and operational excellence.
• Contribute directly to production code and complex technical initiatives in a hands-on leadership capacity.
• Drive adoption of AI-assisted software development practices to improve engineering efficiency and productivity.
• Support hiring efforts and help scale the engineering organization as the business grows.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Required

• 10+ years of software engineering experience.
• 5+ years of engineering leadership experience.
• Minimum 3+ years managing engineering teams directly – ideally teams > 8.
• Strong hands-on software development background with recent coding experience.
• Expertise with Python, React, and modern cloud platforms (AWS and/or GCP).
• Experience building and scaling distributed systems and cloud-native applications.
• Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, deployment practices, and engineering operations.
• Demonstrated success driving engineering delivery within startup or high-growth environments.

Preferred

• Experience within Healthcare, HealthTech, Biotech, or other regulated industries.
• Knowledge of HIPAA, SOC2, clinical data systems, or similar compliance environments.
• Infrastructure and platform engineering expertise.
• Experience with AI products, AI agents, or AI-assisted software development workflows.
