General Summary:

This Director-level role focuses on implementing financial education initiatives, managing The Commons—Tongass FCU’s small business resource center—and supporting community partnerships. The Director builds and maintains relationships with local organizations including schools and nonprofits to deliver financial literacy and outreach programs. They directly teach and present in communities and online, coordinate curriculum development with the VP, and support related tracking, documentation, and program compliance.

The Director leads Tongass FCU’s community development and financial education programs. They utilize the BALANCE platform, train staff in its use, and support outreach to members. They manage community events at The Commons including farmers markets, pop-up shops and business Power Hour workshops. They work with branch teams to deliver impactful, community-focused initiatives aligned with the credit union’s mission. Supported by marketing and guided by the VP, the Director helps shape how Tongass FCU shows up in schools, at events, and in members’ financial lives.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Support & Administration

• Collaborate with the VP to coordinate financial education curriculum development.
• Collaborate with marketing staff to distribute educational resources and support event promotions.
• Provide administrative and logistical support for shared marketing campaigns and member-facing communications.
• Utilize the Balance online education portal, provide staff training on its use, and coordinate member outreach efforts.
• Support and help prepare staff participating in Train-the-Trainer and FiCEP certification efforts.
• Maintain and grow partnerships with local nonprofits, tribal organizations, and public service agencies.
• Assist with community sponsorships, donations, and outreach efforts aligned with TFCU’s mission.
• Document procedures and maintain policy alignment for all education and outreach programs.
• Provide monthly updates to the VP for board reporting.
• Collaborate with the management team, branch managers and frontline staff to implement community-facing programs

The Commons at TFCU

• Take ownership of The Commons as a dynamic community and small business resource space.
• Manage and maintain the scheduling system and daily use of The Commons.
• Build relationships with individuals and groups who use the space to understand their needs and strengthen community connection.
• Coordinate with Pilothouse Coffee staff to support rentals, payments, and shared event planning.
• Develop and oversee a calendar of community events including markets, pop-up shops, gallery exhibits, and Business Power Hour workshops.
• Maintain knowledge of small business owner issues across communities and maintain relationships with our small business services staff to identify opportunities for financial education and support.
• Partner with Spruce Root staff to assist with small business technical assistance and financial wellness efforts.
• Work with local branch and microsite managers to build and maintain relationships with school and educational partners.
• Organize and develop youth-focused financial education curriculum and lesson plans.
• Plan and execute Financial Reality Fairs in all communities, including volunteer coordination, scheduling, documentation, and outreach.
• Oversee TFCU’s annual scholarship program: promote, collect applications, support selection committee, and coordinate announcements.
• Complete certification as a financial counselor and collaborate with TFCU-certified counselors to expand access to services.
• Work with the VP and other departments to promote financial education services in-person and online.
• Track all financial education efforts and assist with related reporting and policy documentation.
• Identify opportunities for adult education in collaboration with branches and community organizations.
• Represent Tongass FCU with professionalism, warmth, and credibility in community settings.
• Confidently teach and present in classrooms, community events, and online formats.
• Collaborate effectively with colleagues across departments and locations.
• Work independently, managing multiple programs and deadlines with minimal oversight.
• Communicate clearly and respectfully in both writing and conversation.
• Bring initiative and creativity to outreach, education, and community-building.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation of all efforts.
• Travel within Southeast Alaska, as needed; familiarity with the communities and culture in our region is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Demonstrated ability to teach and engage with learners in classrooms, workshops, and community settings.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred; field of study is flexible. A combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
• Experience coordinating community programs, delivering education, or supporting financial wellness is strongly valued.
• Comfortable facilitating both youth and adult learning environments.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships, foster a welcoming space, and support day-to-day operations at a community hub like The Commons.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and relationships across communities.
• Proficient with Microsoft 365, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
• Comfortable working independently and as part of a collaborative team.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds.
