Job description

Baltimore Hunger Project | Full-Time | Timonium, Maryland

$90,000–$115,000 annually, commensurate with experience, plus benefits

Baltimore Hunger Project is seeking a Director of Development to lead our fundraising efforts and help us grow our impact in the Baltimore community.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced development professional who wants to make a meaningful difference while playing a central role in a growing nonprofit. Our staff is intentionally small, so this is a highly hands-on leadership position. You will have significant responsibility and autonomy—and you will work closely with our Executive Director, staff, Board, volunteers, donors, corporate partners, foundations, and the broader Baltimore community.

About The Role

The Director of Development will lead the organization's fundraising strategy and execution across individual giving, grants, corporate sponsorships, major donors, annual campaigns, and other development initiatives.

We're looking for someone who can think strategically and roll up their sleeves to get the work done. You might spend one morning developing a fundraising strategy and the next researching a foundation, writing a grant proposal, calling a prospective corporate sponsor, entering gifts into the donor database, or drafting a year-end appeal.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of a broad development portfolio and help build the systems, relationships, and revenue streams that will support Baltimore Hunger Project's continued growth.

What You'll Do
  • Lead fundraising strategy: Develop and execute an annual development plan with clear goals, priorities, timelines, and measures of success.
  • Write and manage grants: Research prospective funders, develop compelling proposals and letters of inquiry, manage the grant calendar, and ensure timely reports.
  • Cultivate individual donors: Identify prospects, build relationships, support major-gift cultivation and solicitation, and develop thoughtful stewardship strategies.
  • Build corporate partnerships: Research and approach prospective corporate sponsors, develop sponsorship proposals, secure support, and cultivate long-term relationships.
  • Create fundraising campaigns: Develop and execute direct mail, email, online, back-to-school, year-end, and other fundraising appeals.
  • Manage the donor database: Maintain accurate donor records, track gifts and pledges, monitor prospects and solicitations, and use data to inform fundraising decisions.
  • Engage the Board and volunteers: Provide tools and create meaningful opportunities for Board members and volunteers to participate in fundraising, donor outreach, and community engagement.
  • Support special events and gatherings: While Baltimore Hunger Project currently has relatively few fundraising events, we anticipate expanding opportunities for donor engagement over time.
  • Tell our story: Work with staff and volunteers to develop compelling communications collateral that demonstrates the impact of Baltimore Hunger Project.
  • Build for the future: Establish effective development processes and identify new opportunities to increase and diversify revenue.
Qualifications
  • 5-7 years of progressively responsible development experience and a demonstrated track record of fundraising success, especially related to grant writing, individual giving, corporate sponsorships and donor cultivation.
  • An exceptional writer and communicator.
  • A natural relationship builder who is comfortable talking with donors, board members, foundation representatives, staff, volunteers, and community members.
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
  • Comfortable working independently and taking initiative.
  • Experienced with donor databases/CRMs and fundraising data.
  • Comfortable working in a small nonprofit where you will be both the strategist and the person doing the work.
  • Knowledgeable about and sensitive to culturally diverse populations and communities, with the ability to build respectful, authentic relationships.
  • Passionate about Baltimore Hunger Project's mission and addressing food insecurity in our community.
Education

Bachelor's degree preferred. Equivalent professional experience and a demonstrated record of fundraising success will also be considered.

Why Baltimore Hunger Project?

You'll join a mission-driven organization with a small, dedicated staff and a large community of volunteers and supporters. This role offers the chance to have a visible, meaningful impact on the organization's growth rather than being one small piece of a large development department.

You will work closely with the Executive Director and have substantial opportunities to shape our fundraising strategy, develop new relationships, and build systems that will serve Baltimore Hunger Project for years to come.

The organization is at an exciting point in its development. Existing fundraising relationships and programs provide a foundation, while there is significant opportunity for the Director of Development to identify new prospects, strengthen donor relationships, expand corporate support, and build a more comprehensive development program.

Location & Schedule

This is a full-time, primarily in-person position based in Timonium, Maryland, with some flexibility to work from home occasionally when appropriate.

Regular interaction with staff, volunteers, donors, corporate partners, and community members is an important part of the role. The Director of Development will also build relationships throughout the greater Baltimore region.

Some evening or weekend availability will occasionally be needed for donor meetings, special events, and community activities.

Compensation & Benefits

$90,000–$115,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications, plus benefits. Baltimore Hunger Project is committed to offering a competitive compensation and benefits package.

Baltimore Hunger Project is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome candidates with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
