Director of Client Accounting

Full-Time, Hybrid-Remote | Madison, WI

Overview

Join a growing accounting firm as our Director of Client Accounting! BTBK Accounting Services specializes in providing consulting and full-service accounting to restaurant industry clients, including multi-unit franchisees and casual dining groups.

This is a leadership seat, not a stepping stone. We are looking for an experienced accounting leader to own client delivery end to end and lead our two client teams (Franchise and Casual Dining). You will work directly with the owner, sit on the Leadership Team, and take over final review of client financials so the owner can focus on growth and advisory. We run on EOS, we are in growth mode, and we are a small company that values flexibility and work life balance where people can make a difference.

The Director of Client Accounting is responsible for the accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency of all client financial reporting. This includes final review of period-end financial statements, reconciliations, and sales and meals tax filings prepared by our staff; ownership of the close calendar and close process; leadership and development of the accounting team; and continuous reduction in the hours required to serve each client through standardized processes and the firm's automation and AI tooling. Internal controls designed to mitigate risk will be adhered to as well as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. This is a full-time hybrid-remote position.

Key Success Factors
  • Ownership mindset: treats every client's financials as your own and does not let an error reach the client or the owner.
  • Ability to lead, coach, and hold accountable a team of accountants, both onsite and remote.
  • Restaurant industry fluency: prime costs, POS-to-GL tie-outs, third-party delivery, tips and payroll liabilities, inventory, and franchise reporting calendars.
  • Process discipline: builds the standard, documents it, and gets the team to follow it.
  • Comfort with technology and a drive to remove manual hours using automation and AI-assisted workflows.
  • Exceptional client relationship and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage unexpected and sometimes urgent firm or client matters as they arise.
  • Project and time management skills across many concurrent clients.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead day-to-day delivery for approximately 36 restaurant clients across two teams (Franchise and Casual Dining); run the team Level 10 meeting and weekly scorecard.
  • Own the period close calendar and close checklist in Asana, including the staff-to-reviewer handoff, and clear blockers before deliverables are late.
  • Serve as final reviewer on client financial statements, balance sheet reconciliations, period-end packages, and multi-state sales and meals tax filings.
  • Manage client relationships for delivery matters and serve as escalation point for client questions on financial results.
  • Attend Leadership Team meetings and participate in general business planning.
  • Standardize how work gets done: one chart of accounts per client segment, one close checklist per client type, and a consistent onboarding process for new clients.
  • Ensure the firm's existing tooling (payroll journal entry builders, sales tax workbooks, inventory adjustments, covenant calculations, POS-to-P&L variance reports) is run by the team as the default process, and document SOPs for each.
  • Partner with the AI Implementation Specialist to identify where staff hours are spent by client and period, prioritize automation targets, and deliver measurable hour reductions each quarter.
  • Review gross margin by client with the owner each quarter and recommend repricing, rescoping, or exit for underperforming engagements.
  • Recruit, onboard, develop, and evaluate accounting team members using the firm's hiring scorecard, People Analyzer, and GWC.
  • Preparation of complex client and internal dashboards, KPIs, and other management reports as needed.
Key Measurables
  • On-time delivery of client financials per each client's close calendar: 95% or better.
  • Days from period end to delivered financials: under 10 business days.
  • Rework and correction rate on delivered work: under 2%.
  • Hours per client per period: reduced 25% within 12 months.
  • Gross margin by client: no client below 40%.
  • Final review fully transitioned from the owner within the first 90 days.
Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting (required).
  • Master's degree in Accounting or Business Administration (preferred).
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) licensure (preferred).
  • 7+ years' experience in general accounting, including 3+ years reviewing others' work, owning a close, and managing a team (required).
  • Restaurant or multi-unit hospitality accounting experience (required).
  • Proficiency in Restaurant365 (required).
  • Multi-state sales and meals tax experience (preferred).
  • Experience working within an EOS-run company (preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience building or documenting standard operating procedures and driving team adoption.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy with strong organizational skills.
  • Has strong interpersonal skills and is skilled in providing a high level of customer service to clients.
  • Writes clearly and professionally; comfortable communicating directly with restaurant operators.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and computer software, including Asana, Clockify, Ignition, and AI-assisted workflows. Places value in paperless initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of Excel.
Work Environment
  • Hybrid in-office and remote environment.
  • Expected overtime, especially during peak periods.
Benefits
  • Competitive salary and performance-based bonuses tied to the measurables above.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Paid time off and holidays.
  • Professional development and continuing education opportunities.
  • Equity and ownership opportunities.
