Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent relevant experience considered.
  • 7+ years in carrier procurement, freight brokerage, or logistics with leadership.
  • Strong knowledge of truckload brokerage and pricing.
  • Experience managing brokerage P&L and margins.
  • Proficiency with TMS, pricing tools, and market data.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategy, operations, and financial performance of the enterprise freight procurement function.
  • Oversee third-party freight execution across flatbed, step-deck, and over-dimensional transportation.
  • Develop pricing strategies using data, market intelligence, and buying trends.
  • Lead carrier procurement, sourcing, negotiation, onboarding, and performance management.
  • Monitor freight markets, capacity trends, and rate movements for pricing decisions.
  • Manage procurement division P&L, revenue, margins, and carrier costs.
  • Establish KPIs for pricing, service, carrier performance, productivity, and efficiency.
  • Coach and develop the procurement team and align staffing with needs.
  • Partner with business segment leaders to understand transportation requirements.
  • Leverage freight volume and relationships to improve economics.
  • Optimize use of TMS, pricing platforms, and AI-enabled technology.
  • Maintain carrier qualification, compliance, scorecards, and controls.
  • Drive continuous improvement in service, pricing accuracy, and profitability.

Job description

Orion Solutions Group has partnered with a growing transportation and logistics organization specializing in complex solutions for the renewable energy and infrastructure sectors. They are seeking an experienced Director of Carrier Procurement Operations to lead and further develop their enterprise carrier procurement team.

This is a high-impact leadership role with responsibility for carrier procurement, strategy, operations, financial performance, pricing, technology, and team development. The Director will partner closely with senior and business segment leadership to ensure reliable capacity, improve transportation economics, strengthen margins, and build a scalable procurement operation that supports continued growth.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the strategy, operations, and financial performance of the enterprise freight procurement function.
  • Oversee third-party freight execution across flatbed, step-deck, and over-dimensional transportation.
  • Develop customer pricing strategies utilizing transportation data, market intelligence, and buying trends to improve win rates and profitability.
  • Lead carrier procurement, sourcing, negotiation, qualification, onboarding, and performance management.
  • Monitor freight markets, capacity trends, and rate movements to support effective pricing and purchasing decisions.
  • Manage the procurement division’s financial performance, including revenue, gross margin, carrier costs, productivity, and seat-cost P&L.
  • Establish and manage KPIs for pricing, service, carrier performance, productivity, and operational efficiency.
  • Lead, coach, and develop the procurement team while aligning staffing and resources with business needs.
  • Partner with business segment leaders to understand transportation requirements and ensure appropriate carrier capacity and operations support.
  • Leverage enterprise freight volume, purchasing patterns, and carrier relationships to improve transportation economics.
  • Optimize the use of TMS, pricing platforms, carrier monitoring tools, market intelligence, automation, and AI-assisted technology.
  • Maintain strong carrier qualification, compliance, score carding, operating controls, and brokerage procedures.
  • Drive continuous improvement across service, efficiency, pricing accuracy, carrier performance, profitability, and scalability.
Education & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Transportation, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in carrier procurement, freight brokerage, transportation, or third-party logistics, including leadership experience.
  • Strong experience across brokerage operations, carrier procurement, and customer pricing.
  • Strong knowledge of truckload brokerage, including flatbed, step-deck, and over-dimensional freight.
  • Demonstrated experience with freight pricing, carrier negotiation, margin management, and transportation market intelligence.
  • Experience managing brokerage financial performance and P&L metrics.
  • Proficiency with transportation management systems, pricing tools, carrier monitoring platforms, and market-data resources.
  • Strong financial, analytical, leadership, negotiation, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to lead teams and influence cross-functional stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to travel as required.
