Job summary

Portledge School in Locust Valley, NY, seeks a passionate and experienced Director of Athletics for a 12-month, full-time role. You will oversee the 5th–12th grade athletic program, guide strategic vision, coaching, scheduling, and program development while promoting sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth.

The role requires weekday evenings and occasional weekends to support events; you will manage staff, budgeting, safety training, and engagement with families and league partners,

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; advanced degree preferred.
• 5+ years of leadership and management experience in school athletics.
• Experience supervising Athletic Department staff and coaches.
• Strong knowledge of athletics program development, safety, and compliance with league and school policies.
• Demonstrated budget management and resource allocation experience.
• Proficiency with Blackbaud and Google Workspace.
• Availability for evenings and weekends to support athletic events.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all aspects of the 5th–12th grade athletics program and strategic vision.
• Lead scheduling, coaching, and program development with a focus on safety and sportsmanship.
• Communicate schedules and updates to students, families and stakeholders.
• Manage athletics website, calendar, TeamSnap, and other channels.
• Direct Athletics Department staff and budget in collaboration with the CFO.
• Coordinate staffing, transportation, and safety training including first aid and concussion management.
• Represent Portledge at league meetings and professional gatherings.
• Participate in Senior Leadership Team and school-wide initiatives.
