Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to search for a Director of Accounting for a mission-driven nonprofit organization. This fully remote role is open to candidates across the United States, with occasional travel for team meetings and organizational events.

The ideal candidate will oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, payroll, compliance, and internal controls, partnering with executive leadership to drive process improvements and sustainable growth while building

Qualifications

• 10+ years of leadership experience overseeing nonprofit accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. nonprofit accounting principles, GAAP, payroll operations, and compliance best practices.
• Experience improving accounting systems, workflows, and operational processes to support organizational growth.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to translate complex financial information for diverse stakeholders.
• Passion for mission-driven work with a collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset focused on innovation and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and payroll teams while fostering a collaborative, high-performing culture.
• Oversee financial reporting, payroll, general ledger operations, cash management, budgeting, and internal controls.
• Partner cross-functionally to provide financial guidance, improve processes, and strengthen organizational decision-making.
• Direct annual audits, tax preparation, compliance initiatives, and risk management activities.
• Drive continuous improvement of accounting systems, workflows, policies, and technology to enhance efficiency and scalability.
• Present financial reporting, forecasts, and strategic insights to executive leadership and the Board.
