Job summary

Community Legal Aid SoCal seeks a Directing Attorney for Access to Justice to lead non‑case programs such as SHLAC and EDPP, with primary ownership for program design and impact.

The role reports to the Director of Legal Services and requires strategic leadership, staff supervision, and collaboration with courts, bar associations, and community partners to expand equitable access to legal resources.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor and active California State Bar membership.
• 8+ years of experience as an attorney.
• 3+ years of experience managing, supervising, and mentoring.
• Ability to travel frequently in and around the service area.
• General legal knowledge of state and federal trial and appellate work (preferred).
• Experience in legal aid or non‑profit organizations (preferred).
• Strong project management or program development experience (strongly preferred).
• Proficiency with legal research, court procedures, and relevant codes.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and oversight of non‑case handling access‑to‑justice programs.
• Supervise, mentor, and support supervising attorneys and program staff.
• Collaborate with program leaders on strategic planning and partnerships.
• Serve as a liaison with courts, bar associations, and community partners.
• Align programs with organizational priorities and policies.
• Coordinate with Finance, HR, Operations, Compliance, and Fund Development.
• Monitor legal trends and program performance to guide improvements.
• Support grant development, reporting, and pro bono initiatives.
• Represent the organization with funders, partners, courts, and regulatory agencies.
• Build strong relationships to increase program visibility and impact.
• Participate in initiatives that advance equitable access to justice.
• Advocate for innovative, community‑centered approaches.
• Perform other duties as required.
