This Director role is responsible for the Northeast book of business within our Commercial Middle Market Custom Solutions organization, leading a team of 5-8 territory managers.

  • This is a remote/WFH role, requiring about 33% travel across the territory, including conferences and leadership/team meetings. Ideally located in any of the states within the territory (OH, PA, DE, MD, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA, NH, VT, ME), with preference for OH, PA, NY, or the Boston Metro area.
  • The role requires an action-oriented leader capable of working at a high pace and driving business growth.
  • Candidates must have prior technical underwriting experience with authority and existing broker/agency relationships.
  • Experience as a people leader is a plus but not mandatory.

Job Description Summary

We seek a professional who is both analytical and a relationship-builder, combining these talents with entrepreneurial drive to manage their territory effectively. Leading a team of Territory Managers and Underwriters, you'll focus on portfolio analysis, relationship management, and account development within your territory.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitor market conditions, research risks, and inform risk selection, renewal retention, and pricing decisions.
  • Analyze performance data to promote profitable growth and partner with team members on large account reviews.
  • Direct pricing standards, recommend underwriting strategies, and oversee underwriting quality.
  • Set department priorities, implement performance metrics, and participate in agency management and reviews.
  • Develop and execute sales plans to meet growth and profitability targets.
  • Engage with agents and brokers to support renewals and business development.
  • Provide strategic input and communicate policies to internal and external partners.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships within the commercial line market.
  • Develop customer service standards and drive performance.
  • Lead training initiatives and coach team members to enhance proficiency.
  • Set operational goals, oversee support functions, and emphasize agency capabilities as competitive advantages.
  • Manage associate performance, including hiring, training, and disciplinary actions.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President, the role may include direct reports such as Territory Managers and Underwriters.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred.
  • Relevant professional designation (e.g., CPCU, CIC) preferred.
  • At least ten years of commercial lines underwriting, sales, and management experience, especially in middle market segments.
  • Extensive knowledge of property/casualty insurance operations and markets.
  • Excellent communication, decision-making, and leadership skills.

Additional criteria, including leadership competencies, may take precedence. Staffing exceptions require approval from HR and leadership.

The salary range is $134,000 - $255,000, with a typical starting range of $144,000 - $216,000, depending on various factors.
