This Director is responsible for the Northeast book of business within our Commercial Middle Market Custom Solutions organization, leading a team of 5-8 territory managers.

  • This is a remote/WFH role, requiring about 33% travel throughout the territory, including conferences and leadership/team meetings. Ideally, candidates will be located in any of the states within the territory (OH, PA, DE, MD, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA, NH, VT, ME), with Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, or the Boston Metro area being especially preferred.
  • This role is critical for driving middle market growth. The successful candidate must be action-oriented, able to work at a high pace, and focused on business development.
  • Qualified candidates should have prior technical underwriting experience with authority, as well as existing broker/agency relationships.
  • Experience as a people leader is a plus but not required.

Job Description Summary

As a Director, you will lead a team of Territory Managers and Underwriters, focusing on sales and underwriting relationships for commercial lines. Your responsibilities include building and maintaining relationships with agencies and brokers, portfolio analysis, and account management within your territory.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitor market conditions, gather and analyze risk information, and support risk selection, renewal retention, and pricing decisions.
  • Analyze performance data to drive profitable growth and partner with territory managers during large account reviews.
  • Direct pricing standards, recommend underwriting strategies, and oversee underwriting quality.
  • Set priorities, workflow standards, and performance metrics for the department, ensuring effective service delivery and organizational alignment.
  • Develop and execute sales plans to achieve growth, retention, and profitability goals.
  • Engage with agents and brokers to support renewals, develop new business, and ensure service standards are met.
  • Collaborate on strategic planning and communicate policies and operational plans internally and externally.
  • Build and maintain strong business relationships within the market, fostering internal and external partnerships.
  • Develop customer service standards and drive performance improvements.
  • Lead training initiatives, coach team members, and set operational expectations.
  • Supervise staff including performance management, training, hiring, and disciplinary actions.

Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to the Associate Vice President. Direct reports may include Territory Managers and Underwriters.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred.

Licenses/Certifications: Relevant designations such as CPCU or CIC are preferred.

Experience: At least ten years in commercial line underwriting, sales, marketing, and agency management, especially in middle market segments. Leadership experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Extensive knowledge of property/casualty insurance operations, products, and markets; excellent communication skills; strategic thinking; decision-making ability; leadership qualities; and results-driven attitude.

Other criteria, including leadership skills and competencies, may take precedence. Staffing exceptions require approval from HR.

Job Conditions: Heavy travel may be required. Work may be from a branch office or remote location. A valid driver’s license and safe driving record are required.
