Director, Media Relations

Responsibilities
  • Develop earned first media strategy and deliver strategic counsel to clients for all things media
  • Lead teams to execute media campaigns from start to finish (ideation through execution)
  • Own relationships with national media and new generation of media influencers
  • Pitch and secure stories with key top-tier media and media influencers
  • Identify and capitalize on real-time cultural moments and trending conversations
  • Develop and execute opportunistic media strategies that align with breaking news and cultural moments
  • Serve as a key client contact and team lead for all media opportunities
  • Develop story pitches and present to teams, clients, prospects
  • Proofread and edit media content, as needed
  • Immerse self in clients’ industries, brands and past media coverage
  • Share ongoing status updates on progress against campaign goals and client objectives with Connectors and account team Catalysts (Account Management), and clients where appropriate
  • Coach junior-level staff members and manage media specialist staff
  • Consume all aspects of media and disseminate news trends to larger team
  • Develop media plans for client and new business plans
  • Collaborate with Catalysts to obtain necessary background, goals, assets, messages and set success metrics and expected results
  • Ensure work meets budget requirements
  • Provide client/spokesperson media training, as needed
  • Collaborate with Catalysts on thought leadership, trend and brand media strategies
What You Have
  • 10+ years of media relations experience is required…retail experience a plus!
  • Experience securing national consumer media coverage across all mediums (broadcast, newspapers, magazines and online) a must
  • Good understanding and daily usage of social media
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and media monitoring, tracking and reporting tools such as Cision, Tweetdeck, Radian6 and Sysomos
  • Willingness to travel
  • Demonstrated success in real-time, culture-driven media strategies
  • Proven ability to identify and capitalize on opportunistic media moments
  • Strong presentation skills (clients and new business meetings)
  • Established relationships with key media contacts across all mediums (print, broadcast, online, etc.)
  • Experience in leading successful media campaigns
  • BA/BS in Journalism, English, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or related field
  • Advanced knowledge of top-tier business and national consumer media, and well-developed skills in building and maintaining traditional and digital media relationships
  • Ability to engage with and counsel senior level decision-makers across the client’s business, and deliver connective insights to assist clients in driving alignment and execution of cross-company initiatives
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with clients on day-to-day activities, managing teams to execute public relations plans effectively, and drafting and implementing communications programs within budget
  • Superior writing skills, expert in Associated Press style with the ability to develop and edit high-quality materials including communications plans, media POV’s, press materials, fact sheets, bylined articles, trend analysis summaries, executive correspondence, and presentations.
  • Entrepreneurial attitude with a knack for building trusted relationships with clients and prospects that lead to additional, incremental new business opportunities
