POSITION SPECIFICS

Penn State Dickinson Law seeks two innovative and collaborative law librarians to serve in Director positions, one as the Director of User Services and one as the Director of Technical Services.

Penn State Dickinson Law is a two-location law school. Penn State Dickinson Law’s primary location is Carlisle, PA, with an additional location in University Park, PA. The overarching mission of Penn State Dickinson Law is to educate and train lawyers who are equipped with skills and competencies to excel in an evolving legal profession. The Law Library plays a central role in the teaching, scholarly, and service missions of the Law School and the larger University. The Law Library Directors will work together to build on the Law Library’s extraordinary strengths and foster a collaborative culture in support of the academic and scholarly goals of the law school community. Both Directors will report to the Associate Dean for Library and Information Services.

Positions:

Director of User Services Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Law Library User Services, including the Access Services department, reference and outreach services, and library instruction for the unified two-location library.
  • Manage policies, decision-making, and procedures to sustain a robust and relevant program of user-focused Law Library services.
  • Supervise and support the development of staff.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Technical Services to promote and support library operations.
  • Participate in collection development to support the curricular and scholarly needs of the Law School community.
  • Teach legal research in the 1L curriculum.
  • Participate in activities related to faculty governance, scholarly research, and professional service.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Director of Technical Services Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the Technical Services department, including print and electronic materials acquisitions and management.
  • Engage in collection assessment and development to support the curricular and scholarly needs of the law school community.
  • Manage policies, decision-making, and procedures to sustain robust and relevant Law Library collections in any format.
  • Supervise and support the development of staff.
  • Collaborate with the Director of User Services to promote and support library operations.
  • Teach legal research in the 1L curriculum.
  • Participate in activities related to faculty governance, scholarly research, and professional service.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and a Master of Library and Information Science (or the equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Five years of progressively responsible management experience as well as substantial experience teaching legal research.
  • The successful candidate will possess a strong service orientation, the ability to work well with students and faculty, and a willingness to work creatively and proactively with minimal direct supervision.
  • The successful candidate will possess a strong commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated legal research, organizational, teaching, communications, and technology skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving legal education and librarianship through teaching, scholarship, and professional service.

Additional Information

  • Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • This is a tenured or tenure-track appointment with librarian tenure in the University Libraries.
  • One Director will be located at each law school location.
