Job summary

Valley Health System is seeking an experiencedAdministrative Laboratory Director to lead our clinical laboratory operations. You will oversee budgeting, policy development, and staff management to ensure high-quality patient care and regulatory compliance.

The role requires a Bachelor's in CLS/MT (Master's preferred), ASCP or equivalent certification, and at least five years in a hospital laboratory leadership position. Collaboration with hospital teams and external partners is essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as administrative laboratory director in moderate- to large-volume hospital-based laboratory.
  • Medical Technologist (ASCP) or equivalent certification required.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, staffing, CAP/TJC compliance, and patient safety standards; strong communication and data-driven decision making.

  • Develops, implements and reviews policies, procedures and protocols for areas of responsibility.
  • Directs and supports laboratory employee relations including hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, evaluations/competency, and disciplinary actions.

Department LABORATORY - 207010 Worker Sub Type Regular Work Shift First Shift (United States of America) Pay Range $51.50 - $79.82

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provides leadership and supports infrastructure of clinical laboratory; serves as leadership liaison for operations of contracted services.
  2. Fosters an environment of service excellence and quality for patients, physicians, clients, and community.
  3. Demonstrates knowledge of and adherence to technical, safety, and legal requirements as established by governing and regulatory agencies, including but not limited to, The Joint Commission, College of American Pathologists and OSHA.
  4. Provides expert input and effective communication of technological issues, methodology, and results to internal and external customers.
  5. Develops, implements and reviews policies, procedures and protocols for areas of responsibility.
  6. Supports development and implementation of effective performance improvement initiatives within area(s) of responsibility.
  7. Establishes key performance indicators to measure and track laboratory operation deliverables to include technical, quality, financial, and other operational metrics.
  8. Develops laboratory leadership staff by fostering an accountable, collaborative approach to departmental leadership.
  9. Directs and supports laboratory employee relations including hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, evaluations/competency, corrective action, and professional development.
  10. Demonstrates good stewardship of resources in capital and operational expenditures; prepares annual budget and reviews/maintains financial performance.
  11. Provides support and accountability for departmental, facility and organizational initiatives around patient safety, patient satisfaction, and employee engagement.
  12. Develops and implements strategic and business plans; oversees development and implementation of strategies for accomplishing departmental and organizational objectives.
  13. Develops and maintains effective departmental communication through staff meetings and other communication forums. Facilitates the flow of information through the continuum of the organization structure.
  14. Facilitates resolution of issues involving staff, patients, physicians, and clients.
  15. Participates in hospital based and corporate committees as appropriate.
Education

Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology required Master's degree preferred

Experience

Minimum 5 years of experience as administrative laboratory director in moderate-to-large volume hospital-based laboratory required

Certification & Licensures

Medical Technologist (ASCP) or equivalent required

Qualifications

Knowledgeable of daily, monthly and annual laboratory budgeting, operations, financial monitoring. Current knowledge of laboratory staffing for volume solutions, productivity assessment and integration of TJC patient safety goals required. Current knowledge of and compliance with all laboratory CAP requirements. Demonstrated competence in providing service to patients of all ages consistent with CAP and TJC patient safety standards. Demonstrated excellence in communication and computer skills, both written and verbal, to lead a workgroup while setting the example for professionalism, data driven decision making, and up to date scientific knowledge for the delivery of consistent excellence in patient care. Ability to support Corporate Laboratory Director, entity Vice Presidents and outside customers in quality systems management, development and retention of human resources, and all laboratory initiatives both intra and interdepartmental required.

Must pay attention to detail and have the ability to work quickly and accurately. Able to prioritize work demands. Maintains professional demeanor, positive verbal skills and productivity under stress. Exhibits excellent customer service oriented demeanor with patients, physicians and employees. Is professional, constructive and positive in all WMC interactions both with all internal laboratory customers and with physicians, patients and vendors. Sets the standard for the laboratory community with regard to patient focus in all decision making, and the evolution and growth of operational excellence contributing to patient safety and positive patient outcomes.
