Job summary

May Mobility, Inc. is seeking a Director of System Safety to lead the day-to-day safety program for L4 deployments in the US and Japan, reporting to the VP of Safety & Validation.

You will guide the safety case, DO gating, and SMS build-out with cross-functional teams and external partners. This role combines strategy and hands-on leadership, requiring 8+ years in safety engineering, experience with ML-driven safety, and a proven ability to communicate with regulators, partners, and executives

Qualifications

• 8+ years in product or system safety engineering, with 3+ years on L3+ AV or comparable hard-tech safety programs.
• Hands-on contribution to safety case work products (HARA, FTA, FMEA) on a shipping vehicle.

Responsibilities

• Lead a multi-disciplinary team across systems, test execution, and safety risk and process/SMS.
• Drive DO gated deployment plan with ride-hail partners (Lyft, Uber) for safety gating and go/no-go decisions.
• Own the Safety Case Framework for L4 systems, including ML-aware analysis and runtime-monitoring.
• Build out and operationalize the SMS: risk assessment, recall plan, and risk register automation.
• Define safety architecture with Autonomy, Validation, and Hardware for scalable runtime monitoring and ODD enforcement.
• Partner with Japan Programs Manager on safety in Japan regulatory engagement.
• Co-lead safety onsites with partners and regulators; communicate technical narratives at all levels.
• Hire and onboard open safety roles and develop leaders in the org.
