Marquette University School of Dentistry, Wisconsin\'s only dental school, seeks a thoughtful and strategic leader to serve as Director of the Postgraduate Program in Periodontics. The program is well established and recognized for its commitment to excellence in advanced periodontal education, patient care, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The next Director will build upon the program\'s strong foundation by ensuring continued academic excellence, operational effectiveness, and full compliance with Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards while advancing thoughtful, evidence-based innovation in periodontal education, clinical training, and scholarly activity. This is a senior faculty leadership role for an individual who can balance operational excellence with strategic program development and who is committed to cultivating an outstanding educational environment for residents, faculty, staff, and patients.

Duties and Responsibilities
Program Leadership and Administration
  • Provide overall leadership, direction, and accountability for the postgraduate Periodontics program.
  • Ensure the continued strength, quality, and sustainability of all aspects of the residency program.
  • Oversee faculty assignments, mentoring, evaluation, recruitment, and professional development.
  • Manage program resources, including budgeting, staffing, equipment, and long-range planning.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing culture among faculty, residents, and staff.
  • Promote effective communication and maintain productive relationships with alumni, referring dentists, and local, regional, and national periodontal organizations.
Education and Curriculum
  • Lead the ongoing development and refinement of the didactic, clinical, surgical, and seminar curriculum.
  • Ensure excellence, consistency, and rigor in resident education, competency assessment, and clinical training.
  • Support evidence-based curricular innovation that enhances resident learning while maintaining alignment with program goals and accreditation standards.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, treatment approaches, and educational initiatives to ensure the curriculum remains contemporary and responsive to the evolving specialty of periodontics.
Clinical Leadership
  • Provide oversight of resident clinical education and delivery of high-quality, patient-centered periodontal and implant care.
  • Ensure an exceptional clinical learning environment that promotes excellence in diagnosis, treatment planning, periodontal surgery, implant therapy, regeneration, and interdisciplinary care.
  • Collaborate with clinical faculty to maintain efficient clinic operations, high standards of patient care, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration with other advanced education programs and predoctoral clinical programs.
Scholarly Activity and Research
  • Promote a strong culture of scholarship, scientific inquiry, and evidence-based practice.
  • Support resident research projects and successful completion of master\'s degree or other program scholarly requirements.
  • Encourage scholarly productivity among faculty and residents through publications, presentations, and research collaborations.
  • Advance opportunities for innovation and externally funded research where appropriate.
Accreditation and Continuous Quality Improvement
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with CODA standards and institutional policies.
  • Lead program assessment, outcomes evaluation, strategic planning, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Prepare for and manage accreditation reporting and site visits.
  • Utilize program outcomes and assessment data to support continuous program enhancement.
Institutional Engagement
  • Collaborate with School leadership on strategic initiatives and postgraduate education priorities.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary education, faculty governance, and institutional service.
  • Represent the postgraduate Periodontics program within the School, the University, and professional organizations at the regional and national levels.
  • Promote the visibility and reputation of the program through professional engagement, recruitment, and outreach.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Candidates must have a DDS/DMD degree from a US or Canadian dental school recognized by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation or a comparable international degree.
  • Eligibility for dental licensure in the State of Wisconsin.
  • Completion of a CODA accredited postgraduate residency program in Periodontics.
  • American Board of Periodontology certification, or board eligibility with certification expected within a defined timeframe.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching, clinical supervision, and/or academic leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead programmatic improvement and foster excellence within an academic or clinical environment.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Advanced degree (MS, MSD, PhD, or equivalent).
  • Previous leadership experience within a CODA-accredited postgraduate Periodontics program.
  • Record of scholarly achievement, including peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and/or externally funded research.
  • Experience with curriculum development, assessment, and educational innovation.
  • Demonstrated success in faculty mentorship, recruitment, and professional development.
  • Experience managing program operations, including budgeting, personnel, facilities, and strategic planning.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary clinical education and implant dentistry.
  • Active participation in regional and national periodontal organizations and professional service.
