Qualifications

  • High School education plus one year dental assistant experience required.
  • Knowledge of dental terminology and anatomy; regulator agency requirements; 4-handed dentistry; instrumentation; x-ray technology and procedures; sterilization procedures; patient management techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Provide dental assistance and instruction to students during examinations and treatments.
  • Assist students and faculty with paperwork related to patient care, including endodontic packets and new patient assignments.
  • Maintain and monitor cleanliness and sterilization of dental equipment per OSHA requirements.
  • Order and stock supplies and assist with budget monitoring and planning.
  • Facilitate patient billing processes, including insurance forms and payments.
  • Answer phones, schedule appointments, manage patient files, and assist hospitals, insurers, and doctors.
  • Maintain patient recall system with scheduling, reminders, and records.
  • Check-out and monitor return of supplies, equipment, and medications for the clinic.
  • Coordinate repair and maintenance of dental equipment.
  • Assist with Sophomore Lab courses: setting up supplies, recording grades, coordinating schedules.
  • Communicate with suppliers and become familiar with new products and equipment.
  • Provide orientation to dental students new to the endodontic department.

The Dental Assistant, Graduate Program Clinic provides assistance to dental residents, students, patients, faculty and staff in the advanced training program clinic and provides instruction to dental students and patients in accordance with the Clinic Operations Manual and standards of care in Dentistry. Currently seeking two (2) qualified dental assistants.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide dental assistance and instruction to students during the examination, diagnostic testing, and treatment of patients and assistance to students and faculty during surgery and dental emergencies including: monitoring patient comfort; taking, developing, and providing instruction about x-rays; and assuring that clinic procedures are followed.
  2. Assist dental students and faculty in the processing of paperwork related to the examination and treatment of patients including: creating and filing endodontic packets; and assigning new patients to students.
  3. Maintain and monitor cleanliness and sterilization of dental equipment and instruments per OSHA requirements.
  4. Order and stock supplies using MU Dental Store procedures and maintain all related paperwork. Assist with budget monitoring and planning.
  5. Facilitate the patient billing process including: preparing and submitting patient insurance forms, collecting payment, and recording patient treatment.
  6. Answer phones, schedule appointments, handle patient files and provide information and assistance to patients, hospitals, insurance companies and doctor’s offices.
  7. Maintain patient recall system including: scheduling appointments; sending postcards and keeping records.
  8. Check-out and monitor the return of supplies, equipment, and medication issued to students and faculty.
  9. Coordinate the repair and maintenance of dental equipment.
  10. Assist with the Sophomore Lab courses including: setting-up supplies and equipment; recording grades; and coordinating the lab schedule.
  11. Communicate with suppliers and become familiar with new products and equipment.
  12. Provide orientation to dental students new to the endodontic department.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

High School education plus one year dental assistant experience required including knowledge of dental terminology and anatomy; regulator agency requirements; 4-handed dentistry; instrumentation; impression materials and cements; x-ray technology and procedures; sterilization procedures; patient management techniques; and Health-Care Provider CPR . Also requires dexterity, ability to tolerate long periods of bending, standing and walking, strong verbal and written communication skills as well as basic computer skills, excellent customer service and listening skills, discretion, flexibility, ability to work and communicate with people from a diverse population; and the ability to work independently with little supervision and constant interruptions in an environment that can be stressful. Previous experience working in an academic setting and knowledge of Marquette University School of Dentistry policy and procedures helpful.
