Job summary

Lilly is seeking a Director of AI/ML for Generative Foundation Models for Biotherapeutics in the San Diego area. You will lead a cross-disciplinary team advancing de novo design platforms combining AI/ML, protein engineering, and high-throughput experiments.

Role requires a Ph.D. with multiple years of experience, strong Python/PyTorch skills, and a track record of end-to-end model development from concept to experimental validation. A competitive compensation package is offered.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in computer science or related field; 3+ years research after Ph.D.
• First-author or equivalent contributions to structure-based generative models.
• Experience training deep learning models on multi-node infrastructure; strong Python and PyTorch.

Responsibilities

• Lead generative AI and protein foundation model development for design tasks.
• Set training strategy and pre-training/fine-tuning approaches for models.
• Design training infrastructure and scale against LillyPod capacity with ML engineers.
• Direct calibration work, aligning model rankings with experimental results.
• Improve models by diagnosing root causes across architecture and data.
• Advance foundation model portfolio with measurable experimental outcomes.
• Leverage proprietary biological data for enhanced learning signals.
• Provide scientific leadership and mentorship to researchers and engineers.
• Evaluate external innovations and partnerships; decide make/adapt/partner.
