Job description

Role Summary

The Director of Engineering for IDEX Advanced Flow Solutions (AFS) is a senior member of the AFS leadership team, responsible for setting technical strategy and leading innovation across a diverse product portfolio. This role drives the evolution from stand‑alone mechanical and electrical products to integrated, data‑enabled systems that improve efficiency, reduce cost, and enhance customer value. The Director leverages engineering talent, processes, and technology to accelerate growth, strengthen differentiation, and reduce time to market. Our $115M+ growth focused business unit operates across two distinct revenue streams. This role oversees multi‑disciplinary engineering functions including software development, new product development, sustaining engineering, and project management.

Duties / Responsibilities
  • Direct and coordinate all engineering activities, including new product development (NPD), sustaining engineering, systems engineering, and technology development (mechanical and software), ensuring alignment to business priorities, schedules, and resource plans.
  • Partner closely with Product Management, Quality, Technical Support, Sales & Marketing, and Operations to define requirements, resolve technical tradeoffs, and ensure products meet performance, reliability, safety, cost, and manufacturability targets.
  • Define, own, and execute the product and technology roadmap for AFS in collaboration with the Business Unit General Manager and other department leaders.
  • Lead technical due diligence and capability assessments for product acquisitions, partnerships, and internal development programs to support both organic growth and inorganic growth strategies across AFS.
  • Drive engineering change management initiatives to transition NPD and sustaining engineering teams from cost‑out‑driven, long development cycles to agile, growth‑oriented development models that accelerate time to market while meeting performance, safety, quality, and cost requirements.
  • Establish and standardize engineering processes, governance, and development frameworks that enable a shift from component‑level products to integrated systems solutions capable of rapid adaptation to evolving market demands.
  • Design and implement the engineering organizational structure, role definitions, and talent strategy, including capability assessments, succession planning, and targeted hiring, to ensure the organization can execute current and future strategic initiatives.
  • Work cross‑functionally with pre‑sales and post‑sales technical teams to translate customer requirements into engineering solutions, support complex customer engagements, and resolve technical issues impacting product adoption and performance.
  • Represent AFS as a senior technical authority in meetings with key customers, suppliers, industry partners, and trade organizations, providing technical leadership, credibility, and direction on product and system capabilities.
Required Skills / Abilities
  • Proven leadership in NPD, sustaining engineering, and product cost‑out within electro‑mechanical organizations.
  • Demonstrated success leading change, building technology roadmaps, and launching products that drive business growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence others in a cross‑functional, team environment.
Education / Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required (Mechanical, Electrical or Software preferred).
  • 10+ years of progressive engineering leadership experience in a growth‑focused manufacturing environment.
  • 5+ years serving as the technical leader for engineering teams.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Leads a multi‑disciplinary engineering organization, including sustaining, NPD, software, and electrical engineering teams, with direct supervision of at least one Engineering Manager.

Physical Requirements

Primarily office‑based with periodic presence in manufacturing and lab environments to support engineering, operations, and product development activities. Regular use of computer systems and digital collaboration tools to review technical data, designs, and reports. Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders through in‑person meetings, virtual platforms, and written correspondence. Occasional travel and participation in customer, supplier, or industry meetings as required.

Travel

Up to 10% domestic travel may be required.
