Job summary

PMA Companies in Pasadena, CA is seeking a Director of Underwriting to lead the Commercial Markets Underwriting team in the West region, driving profitability and a strong book of business. You will oversee P&L, loss and ALAE ratios, and controllable expenses while aligning strategy with segment management.

You will recruit, train and manage underwriters across locations, delegate authority, monitor performance, and advance industry-focused plans with brokers and agents.

Qualifications

• 10+ years commercial casualty underwriting experience and 7+ years management/supervisory experience preferred.
• Strong technical underwriting skills in casualty lines, particularly workers' compensation.
• Excellent presentation skills and strong oral and written communication skills.
• Strong management, planning, organizational, and analytical skills.
• Proven negotiating and talent development ability; mentoring for high performance.
• Ability to travel and experience with remote management.

Responsibilities

• Lead Commercial Markets Underwriting in the West region.
• Achieve annual profit and revenue objectives with P&L responsibility including loss and ALAE ratio.
• Collaborate with regional and segment management to execute CMU’s business plan.
• Develop and execute annual and long-range premium and business plans reflecting territory potential.
• Hire, train, and monitor underwriting staff and broker assignments to exceed goals.
• Delegate underwriting authority as necessary and monitor policy adherence.
• Advance industry-focused strategies and develop new account monitoring tools.
