Job summary

Bates College seeks a Director of Campus Safety to lead a 24/7, non-sworn safety program with a strong emphasis on community engagement. You will manage a team of about 30 professionals across patrol, communications, access control, transportation, and operations, while reporting to the Associate Vice President & Dean of Students.

The role requires strategic operational leadership, policy development, emergency management, Clery Act compliance, and coordination with police, fire, EMS, and other

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, emergency management, higher education, student affairs, or related field.
• Master's degree in similar fields preferred.
• At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in campus safety, law enforcement, emergency management, public safety, or related field.
• Experience supporting or leading 24/7 operations, on-call response, or crisis decision-making.
• Working knowledge of the Clery Act and higher education safety practices.
• Experience with budgets, planning, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Lead a multidisciplinary department of ~30 employees across patrol, communications, access control, transportation, and operations.
• Serve as a trusted adviser to College leadership and work with partners across Student Affairs and Bates units.
• Oversee 24/7 campus safety operations and incident response.
• Coordinate communications, dispatch, and emergency management activities.
• Ensure Clery Act compliance and coordination with external public safety partners.
