Job summary

The City of New York's Department of Transportation seeks an experienced transportation executive to lead the Automated Enforcement Unit. Reporting to the Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Operations, the Assistant Commissioner will oversee 2,200+ fixed speed cameras, 500+ red light cameras, 1,000+ACE cameras, and related systems, guiding policy, audits, and program expansion.

This role emphasizes contractor management, budgeting, and interagency collaboration as Vision Zero advances.

Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree in a related field and five years of satisfactory full-time experience in traffic flow, highway capacity analysis, or related transportation planning fields; two years in an administrative capacity.
• A master's degree in transportation planning, traffic engineering, or a related area with three years of related experience, including administrative responsibilities.
• Alternative combination of education and experience meeting the above criteria, with at least two years in an administrative capacity in the US.

Responsibilities

• Direct the daily operation of the Automated Enforcement Unit, overseeing over 2,200 fixed speed cameras, 500+ red light cameras, and 1,000+ ACE cameras along with two Weigh in Motion systems.
• Lead violation processing and provide policy guidance for unit functions.
• Evaluate new enforcement technologies, prepare RFPs, and coordinate citywide installation of new camera infrastructure.
• Serve as liaison between NYC DOT and technology vendors to ensure contract performance and audit contractor work.
• Stay current on state and local legislation affecting enforcement practices and effective speed management.
• Oversee three satellite offices, budgets, overtime, staff discipline and documentation.

Education

Bachelor's degree in a related field
