Job summary

MasTec Communications Group is hiring a Directional Drill Operator/Locator Trainee to learn and support our Long Haul Travel crew. You will train under the Foreman, Operator, and Locator to perform drilling tasks safely, including locating utilities and executing bore shots.

The role emphasizes hands-on learning in Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), utility locating, and safe drilling practices, with travel up to 100% and a structured training path toward independent operation.

Qualifications

• Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent.
• CDL Class A with tanker endorsement is required.
• OSHA 10 certification is required.
• TWIC credential is required.
• 1–2 years of experience in Construction Telecom or a similar industry.

Responsibilities

• Observe and assist the crew leader with operating the directional drill.
• Spot and expose utilities to prevent hits during bore operations.
• Fill out pre-job briefings to mitigate hazards.
• Operate drill rig safely and efficiently.
• Pothole utilities that will be crossed or paralleled during bore shots.
• Locate and verify existing utilities to avoid damage.
