Job summary

Abraxas Youth & Family Services is hiring a Youth Counselor / Juvenile Detention Specialist in Morgantown, PA. Youth Counselor | Juvenile Detention Specialist

Location: Abraxas Academy, 1000 Academy Dr., Morgantown, PA 19543

We are hiring a Youth Counselor / Juvenile Detention Specialist to join our Juvenile Services unit. In this role you will help at‑risk adolescents BUILD BETTER FUTURES by providing daily supervision, counseling, and crisis support in a secure detention setting.

Compensation: $25.00 per hour. This is a full‑time position (Second Shift) and requires availability on weekends.

Position Details

• Detailed training and ongoing support. • Ability to move forward in your career. • Working with a national nonprofit focused on at‑risk youth.

Responsibilities
  • Direct the daily activities of juvenile males in programming utilizing acceptable behavioral management principles.
  • Supervise clients during daily activities to ensure safety and security.
  • Maintain regular communication with supervisor and co‑workers.
  • Conduct headcounts, room checks, and observe client movement to maintain facility security.
  • Observe client behavior and intervene appropriately.
  • Process intakes and screen clients according to program policy.
  • Respond to emergencies, including evacuation, CPR, and first aid.
  • Demonstrate safe crisis management techniques and skills.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Associate’s degree or sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain clearances: PA State Police, Child Abuse, FBI.
  • Must pass a drug test, pre‑employment physical exam, TB test, and both federal and state background checks.
  • Must be physically capable of handling adolescents during crisis situations using safe crisis management techniques.
  • Must exercise independent judgment in crisis situations.
  • Must be prompt, dependable, and able to establish professional boundaries and maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be able to follow direction, solve problems, and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Must be comfortable dealing with people who are in treatment and justice‑involved.
  • Must enforce rules in a firm yet supportive manner.
  • Must speak and write clearly, be computer literate, and proficient with Microsoft Office Word and Outlook.
  • Must guide and instruct facility residents in all applicable rules and procedures in accordance with the Resident Handbook.
  • Must create and/or maintain routine records, logs, and reports; learn relevant regulations and licensing requirements.
  • Must be available to work weekends.
