Resources for Human Development (RHD) is seeking an Instructor / DSP Peer Mentor to provide instructional support, mentoring, and direct services to adults with IDD. You will develop learning activities, life skills training, and self-advocacy programs while mentoring new DSPs and ensuring high-quality service delivery.

This role maintains documentation, supports participant outcomes, and promotes a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment in line with RHD’s mission and Code of Ethics.

Qualifications

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems.
  • Strong communication, coaching, and teamwork skills.

INSTRUCTOR/DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL/PEER MENTOR

The Instructor / DSP Peer Mentor provides instructional support, mentoring, and direct services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This role develops and delivers learning activities, life skills training, self-advocacy programs, and participant engagement opportunities that promote independence, choice, and personal growth. The Instructor also serves as a mentor to new Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), providing guidance, coaching, and support to ensure high-quality service delivery. This position maintains accurate documentation, supports participant outcomes, and promotes a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment in accordance with RHD's mission and Code of Ethics.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Deliver instructional activities and learning opportunities for participants, including independent living skills, self-advocacy, program engagement, and other educational classes.
  • Develop curriculum, teaching materials, learning aids, and training resources tailored to participants' abilities, interests, and goals.
  • Implement individualized service plans and instructional strategies that support participants' physical, emotional, social, and educational development.
  • Supervise and support participants in ratios ranging from 1:1 to 1:12, ensuring engagement and meaningful participation throughout the day.
  • Monitor participant progress, provide ongoing assessment, and document outcomes accurately and timely.
  • Maintain participant records, data collection tools, assessments, and all required documentation according to funding and agency requirements.
  • Coordinate service delivery needs with the Service Coordinator, QDDP, and Program Services Director.
  • Assist with staff development by providing training, coaching, and hands-on instruction during staff training sessions.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor to newly hired DSPs through regular coaching, feedback, and support.
  • Document mentoring activities and communicate recommendations to supervisors.
  • Promote participant motivation, independence, self-determination, and community inclusion.
  • Ensure participant safety, confidentiality, and dignity at all times.
  • Complete incident and accident reports according to agency policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Adhere to OSHA, HIPAA, organizational policies, and all health and safety procedures.
  • Attend required trainings, meetings, and professional development activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one year of employment with RHD preferred for DSP Peer Mentor responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) services, Person-Centered Planning, Positive Behavior Supports, and People First Language.
  • Strong communication, coaching, and team-building skills.
  • Ability to develop instructional materials and facilitate learning activities.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow written instructions and participant plans.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems.
  • Valid driver's license, vehicle registration, and reliable transportation.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, lift, and assist participants as needed.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to travel between program locations and drive agency or personal vehicles when required.
  • Ability to participate in community-based activities and training events.
Work Environment
  • Services are provided in program facilities, community settings, and multiple office locations.
  • Flexible work schedule may be required, including evenings, weekends, and travel between locations.
