Job summary

Job Description

Job Summary: The Direct Support Personnel (DSP) is responsible for providing support, care, and assistance to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This role ensures the well-being, safety, and personal growth of the individuals served by promoting independence and community inclusion.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist individuals with daily living activities including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and eating.

Support individuals in achieving personal goals and participating in community activities.

Administer medications and document accordingly (with proper training and certification).

Monitor and report changes in physical or emotional health to supervisory staff.

Maintain a clean, safe, and supportive environment.

Assist with transportation to appointments, social events, or work-related activities.

Implement behavior support plans and follow therapeutic interventions.

Document progress, incidents, and daily activities as required by agency policies.

Foster respectful, empathetic, and professional relationships with individuals, families, and team members.

Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and required certifications (CPR, First Aid, etc.).

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED required; additional coursework in human services preferred.

Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (if transportation duties are required).

Ability to pass background checks and drug screenings.

Effective communication skills—both written and verbal.

Patience, compassion, and a genuine interest in supporting people with disabilities.

Physical ability to lift, transfer, and assist individuals as needed.

Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays if required.

Work Environment:

Work may take place in residential homes, day programs, or community settings.
May involve exposure to individuals with behavioral challenges.
