Job summary

3M is seeking a Digital Science Development Specialist for on-site work at the Maplewood, MN campus. The role drives digital capabilities across AAD laboratories, serving as the Digital Lab pilot's technical owner and aligning scientists with data teams to translate R&D challenges into scalable data-driven solutions.

The position emphasizes predictive modeling, AI-enabled workflows, lab automation, and data-driven experimentation, with 5% travel.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or related technical field (completed and verified prior to start).
• Seven (7) years of experience across multidisciplinary R&D, modeling, digital, and/or business teams with hands-on experience in modeling & simulation, DOE, statistical analysis, data analytics, predictive modeling, AI, machine learning.
• Additional qualifications preferred include a Master's or Ph.D. in related fields and experience in product development, digital transformation, or lab automation.

Responsibilities

• Identify and prioritize digital science opportunities to accelerate innovation and improve laboratory productivity.
• Partner with product developers, laboratory scientists, and SMEs to translate technical challenges into digital and data-driven solutions.
• Collaborate with Corporate Research Laboratory modeling teams to deploy predictive modeling, simulation, machine learning, and advanced analytics capabilities.
• Lead pilot projects involving AI, digital science, and data-driven experimentation.
• Define laboratory data requirements and partner with digital and data teams to improve data quality, accessibility, and usability.
• Support the development and implementation of predictive models for formulation, process, application, and performance-related challenges.
• Drive adoption of digital tools, workflows, and best practices across laboratory organizations.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and identify opportunities to apply digital capabilities to product and technology development.
• Measure and communicate business impact from digital science initiatives.
• Contribute to the long-term Digital Lab roadmap and capability development strategy.
