Job description

NECSI is seeking a versatile digital marketing and communications professional to develop high-quality content and plan, execute, and manage communications across websites, social media, email, and other digital channels.

About NECSI

The New England Complex Systems Institute (NECSI) is a nonprofit research and education institute advancing the science of complex systems and applying it to real-world challenges across fields including public health, biology, engineering, economics, international development, conflict, and social systems.

NECSI is a small, mission-driven organization, which means team members have the opportunity to contribute across a range of projects and develop a broad set of skills.

NECSI also works closely with the World Health Network (WHN), an independent global network of scientists, healthcare professionals, and community members working to improve public health through scientific collaboration, communication, and action.

About the Role

This is a hands‑on role for someone who is comfortable working across the digital marketing and communications landscape. The person in this position will help translate complex scientific, public health, and policy‑related ideas into clear, engaging digital communications and will be involved in both day‑to‑day execution and broader communications planning.

Because we are a small organization, the role is varied. On any given week, you might be developing social media content, updating a website, preparing an email campaign, creating graphics, reviewing analytics, helping organize a communications initiative, or working directly with researchers and volunteers to turn their ideas into accessible content.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, create, execute, and manage digital communications across NECSI and World Health Network websites, social media, email, and other channels.
  • Actively leverage AI tools for content creation, campaign planning, project coordination, and workflow improvement, while maintaining accuracy and editorial oversight.
  • Develop compelling written and visual content, including graphics, digital campaigns, and promotional materials.
  • Collaborate with researchers, volunteers, and organizational leadership to translate complex scientific, public health, and technical ideas into clear, accessible communications.
  • Manage website content and updates, social media publishing, and email communications.
  • Support communications around research, public health initiatives, events, publications, and other organizational activities.
  • Monitor digital performance and use analytics to evaluate effectiveness and improve communications strategies.
What We're Looking For

We are looking for a versatile, creative, and highly organized digital marketing and communications professional who is enthusiastic about using emerging technologies to work more effectively. The ideal candidate will have hands‑on experience with AI tools and a demonstrated interest in applying them to content creation, communications planning, project management, and workflow improvement. We value someone who is comfortable experimenting with new tools, developing practical solutions, and exercising sound judgment about the accuracy and quality of AI‑assisted work.

Strong candidates will have:

  • Experience in digital marketing, communications, content creation, or a related area.
  • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills.
  • Experience managing social media channels and creating digital content.
  • Experience with website content management systems.
  • Familiarity with email marketing platforms and digital campaign tools.
  • Experience with graphic design tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accuracy when working with scientific, public health, or technical subject matter.
  • Good organizational and project-management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • The ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating closely with a small team.
  • Curiosity and a willingness to learn new platforms, technologies, and subject areas.
  • Experience creating AI‑assisted dashboards, project tracking systems, or other tools that help teams coordinate projects and communications is a plus.

Experience communicating scientific, public health, nonprofit, research, academic, or policy‑related material is helpful but not required.
