Job description

Summary:

Under the general supervision of a Senior Dietitian, Clinical Dietitian, or Lead Dietetic Technician, supports the Clinical Dietitians by collecting information, reporting observations, and communicating with the patient/client family or caregiver. Responsibilities include obtaining nutrition/weight histories, food allergies, and preferences; adjusting meal selections; monitoring menu compliance; conducting meal rounds; and providing education on food choices and meal planning. Reports observations to the Clinical Dietitian to assist in documenting response to the nutrition care plan and to help adjust the plan to meet patient/client goals. Implements and monitors nutrition interventions as assigned.

Responsibilities:
  1. Collaborates with the clinical dietitian at Brown University Health Cardiac Rehab programs and the chef for the Dean Ornish Intensive Cardiac Rehab program regarding dietary guidelines, recipe modifications, and patient education sessions.
  2. Works with rehab staff and culinary interns on cooking demonstrations and supermarket tours.
  3. Collects and reviews food and nutrient intake information, including current and previous diets, meal and snack patterns, nutritional supplements, food allergies, and cultural preferences.
  4. Obtains anthropometric information from medical records or by interviewing patients, families, or caregivers.
  5. Reviews medical records after department nutrition risk assessment from electronic nutrition screen and documents feedback.
  6. Provides nutrition interventions and care plans as directed by the Clinical Dietitian.
  7. Responds to patient inquiries regarding interventions within scope of practice.
  8. Verifies implementation of nutrition plans and patient needs are met.
  9. Monitors nutrition through meal recalls, nutrient intake analysis, and documentation.
  10. Engages with patients and families to review menu options, progress, and nutritional care plans, conducting ongoing assessments and revisions as needed.
  11. Conducts individual and group nutrition education sessions to prepare patients for long-term dietary changes at home.
Other Information:

Basic Knowledge:

  • Completion of a baccalaureate degree from a US regionally accredited college/university or foreign equivalent, including ACEND Didactic Program in Dietetics.
  • Or completion of all ACEND required nutrition classes in a 4-year program with pending advanced culinary internship and anticipated baccalaureate degree completion within 6 months.
  • Evidence of Safe Serve Certification.
  • Thorough understanding of nutrition science, dietetics principles, and evidence-based practice.
  • Knowledge of food nutritional values.
  • Analytical skills to identify nutritional problems and develop care plans.
  • Effective communication skills for working with patients, families, and staff.
  • Ability to provide culturally sensitive nutritional care.
  • Understanding of food service systems and computer skills in Microsoft Office.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in a nursing home, hospital, or restaurant with food and nutrition, and familiarity with hospital electronic health records is desirable.
