Job Summary
- Performs basic patient care activities and related non-professional services in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. Monitors and records vital signs

Essential Functions
To perform this job, an individual must perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Demonstrates to others the consistent ability to provide for patient positioning or ambulatory needs according to procedures and directions
- Answers patient call system promptly within 3 rings
- Provides restricted, supplemental fluids/feedings based on patient plan of care
- Ensures trays are checked against patient identification and diet according to procedure with no reported errors
- Performs the following patient hygiene needs:
- Changes bed linens
- AM/PM care, oral and nail care
- Incontinent and Foley care
- Correctly calculates intake and output to include:
- P. O. Liquids
- % of diet eaten
- Voids
- Foley Catheters
- BMs
- Assists the nursing staff with the following:
- Removing a patient from a bedpan
- Assisting to ambulate a patient to bedside commode
- Assist with insertion of Foley catheter
- Answering call lights
- Replacing ice packs as ordered
- Apply Ted Hose
- Apply simple orthopedic devices-i.e., sling, swathe, heel protectors and traction
- Maintains patient safety by elevating side rails, placing call lights within reach, and applying restraining devices when indicated according to established procedures with no reported errors and documents restraint care on flow sheet
- Assists with providing for a clean and stocked patient environment to include:
- Water & Ice
- Linen
- Patient care supplies
- Demonstrates consistent ability to perform routine patient treatments according to procedure to include:
- Height
- Weight
- Temperature, pulse respirations
- Blood Pressure
- Blood Glucose Testing
- Removal of Peripheral IV's
- Connecting patient to bedside cardiac monitor/tele box
- Removal of Foleys
- Documents patient's TPR, I's and O's, hourly rounding, bedside shift reporting, diet %, and other unit specific and document correctly on worksheets according to established procedures with no more than 2 errors of recording per month
- Assists with the preparation of rooms for admission/transfer according to unit guidelines, policies & procedures
- Scans all items used for patient care from the materials management system
- Communicates all patient and visitors complaints to Charge Nurse
- Assists with transfer to ancillary department, when requested, as evidenced by no more than 2 complaints from receiving department
- Enforces the traffic control/visitation policies. Notifies nurse of any problems
- Ensures that supplies and equipment are returned to central sterile area by placing in soiled utility room and covered with red bag
Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalent, preferred
License/Certification
- Current State Certification (CNA)
- BLS-required upon hire and continuously thereafter
- CPI - required within 6 months of hire and annually thereafter
Experience
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
