Carolina Dunes Behavioral Health is seeking a Dietary Aide to join our on-site food service team in Leland, NC. The role supports meal prep, service to patients and staff, and sanitation of kitchen areas and equipment, ensuring compliance with infection control procedures.

Responsibilities include assisting cooks, stocking meals and supplies, and collaborating with nursing staff on patient dietary needs. High school diploma preferred; Serv Safe or similar certification is preferred.

  • 1+ years of experience in a food-service role in institutions such as hospitals or cafeterias preferred
  • Understand safe food-handling procedures
  • Ability to operate basic kitchen equipment (dishwasher, stove, oven, mixer)

About the Job

This position is 5 days/week and works from 12:00pm to 8:00pm.

Purpose Statement

The Dietary Aide maintains kitchen areas in a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly manner. The aid assists cooking staff in preparing meals according to the menus planned, provides service or delivery of food to patients and employees, and cleans the department and equipment using proper infection control procedures. The aid advises the kitchen supervisor of safety concerns and the need for equipment repairs.

Roles and Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Wash, clean, and sanitize kitchen cookware, utensils, dishes, trays, and any service prep items.
  • Empty trash receptacles into the dumpster.
  • Clean kitchen areas—including cooking areas, prep area, restrooms, serving counters, dish‑washing area, dry storage area, cooler and freezers—according to policy with appropriate chemicals and processes.
  • Assist cooking staff in meal preparations, including mixing, measuring ingredients, cutting, and stirring.
  • Assist with unloading and stocking of storage areas and coolers/freezers during truck food deliveries.
  • Serve food to patients and staff at the serving counter.
  • Stock consumable products, napkins, cups, plastic ware, condiments, etc.
  • Clean the dining area after meals, including floors, tables, seats, and beverage stations.
  • Assist the cook and plan schedules so that all assigned foods are ready on time.
  • Assemble items needed for preparation from low‑temperature storage units and storerooms.
  • Prepare snacks, floor stock, late trays, salads, desserts, beverages, bread, and condiments for serving and delivery to units.
  • Set up the steam table to make items attractive and serve in standardized portions; label food according to modification.
  • Services and restock food throughout the serving period, communicating with the cook to ensure foods are replenished promptly.
  • Prepare leftover food for proper storage, label with description and date, and assist in cleaning the steam table and pans.
  • Transport, sort, and wash all dishes from the dining room and units using the dish machine; scrub and disinfect pots and pans; return clean items to appropriate storage areas; record dish‑machine temperatures at each meal washing service.
  • Keep the dish room, utility room, and pot‑and‑pan area clean and orderly, free from standing water, and transport trash to the dumpster.
  • Provide information to nursing staff regarding patient responses to foods.
  • Adhere to menu compliance and special‑diet compliance; report any dietary non‑compliance, concerns, or complaints of patients to the dietician, supervisor, or manager.
  • Assist with receiving and checking in food/supplies to ensure proper handling and storage.

Education/Experience/Skill Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • One or more years of experience in a food‑service role preparing food for institutions such as schools, hospitals, or cafeterias preferred.
  • Understand safe food‑handling procedures.
  • Ability to operate a dishwasher, stove, oven, mixer, and other related equipment.

Licenses/Designations/Certifications

Serv Safe Certification or similar food‑safety certification, where required by the state and facility.

Work Location

This position is on‑site at the facility and is not a remote position.

This position is an Individual Contributor.
