Job summary

Knife River Corporation is seeking an experienced mechanic to repair and maintain trucks, bulldozers, scrapers, loaders, trenchers and asphalt equipment. You will diagnose issues and perform repairs using hand tools, welding equipment and diagnostic resources while upholding safety standards.

The role follows a Monday–Friday 6:00 AM–6:00 PM schedule with one Saturday per month; overtime or nights may be required. Starting pay is $26 per hour, depending on experience, with comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience on heavy equipment and vehicles (diesel/gasoline).
  • GED or equivalent combination of experience.
  • CDL endorsements and medical card are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Use manuals, hand tools and power tools to perform repairs.
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions via diagnostics tools and inspection.
  • Repair and replace components such as transmissions, brakes, hydraulics.
  • Ensure safety devices and guards are intact and compliant.
  • Complete paperwork for preventive maintenance and repairs.

ROLE OVERVIEW

Mechanic repairs and maintains trucks, bulldozers, scrapers, wheel and track loaders, trench diggers, asphalt equipment as well as any other type of machinery that may be brought in for maintenance and/or repairs.

Typical schedule is Monday - Friday 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM with one Saturday per month. Schedule may vary due to weather and customer demand.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  1. 2+ years of experience working on heavy equipment and construction type vehicles both diesel and gasoline.
  2. Ability to hold and maintain proper licensure and acceptable driving record.
  3. GED and/or equivalent combination of experience.
  4. Ability to work flexible shifts, including overtime, possible nights and some Saturday.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
  1. CDL and endorsements related to the mechanic and transport field
  2. Current medical card.
  3. Mechanic Certifications from an accredited program.
  4. Light welding experience.
DUTIES and/or RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Utilize manuals, hand tools & power tools.
  2. Utilize on-line computer research and diagnostics resource tools.
  3. Extensive knowledge of electrical power, transmissions, brake, hydraulic and other equipment systems.
  4. Ability to read job orders, observe and listen to equipment in operation to determine system malfunctions.
  5. Repair cylinders, elevator chains, undercarriages, planetaries, recharges and replaces batteries, transmissions, torque converters, planetaries and hydraulic pumps using mechanic hand tools, welding equipment, standard charts and hoists.
  6. Examine and replace protective guards, loose bolts and specific safety devices on heavy equipment as needed.
  7. Lubricates moving parts and drives repaired truck or equipment to verify conformance to specifications.
  8. Completes appropriate paperwork to support preventative maintenance and repair activities.
  9. Ensure MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, safety and environmental regulation compliance.
  10. Always work safely and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes, and behaviors.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITITES
  1. Extensive knowledge and experience with all types of gasoline and diesel construction equipment and vehicles.
  2. Ability to safely use hand tools and equipment.
  3. Must be able to troubleshoot and problem solve.
  4. Independently working to assess and repair equipment appropriately.
COMPENSATION

Starting at $26.00 per hour and up depending on experience.
