Job summary

Mid-Atlantic Truck & Equipment in Hampton, VA is seeking an experienced Diesel Technician to diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy trucks and equipment. You will use diagnostics to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and engine issues and perform preventative maintenance to keep fleets on the road.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years' experience with hydraulic pumps, cylinders, valves, and hoses.
  • 2+ years’ of MIG and stick welding experience
  • 3+ years’ of automotive electrical experience
  • 3+ years’ of diesel engine repair is preferred
  • Must have own tools
  • Class A or B CDL is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy-duty work trucks and equipment, including diesel engines and hydraulics.
  • Use diagnostic tools to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and engine issues.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs per procedures.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems and PTO-driven components.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems; follow safety and quality procedures.
  • Document work thoroughly in electronic work orders.
  • Communicate with Service Manager and team on diagnoses and parts needs.
  • Continue developing technical skills through training and hands-on coaching.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

As a Heavy Truck Diesel Mechanic, you will:

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy-duty work trucks and equipment, including diesel engines, chassis, drivetrains, hydraulics, electrical systems, brakes, and related components.
  • Use diagnostic tools and equipment to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and engine-related issues and accurately identify the cause of failures.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs, including inspections, fluid and filter services, lubrication, brake and suspension work, tire replacement, cooling system maintenance, and other component repairs.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, including PTO-driven systems, pumps, cylinders, valves, hoses, and related components.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems, using a structured approach to identify wiring, power, sensor, and component issues.
  • Complete repairs safely and efficiently, using professional tools and following manufacturer and company procedures.
  • Document work thoroughly and accurately through electronic work orders, including diagnostics performed, repairs completed, parts used, and additional work recommended.
  • Communicate with the Service Manager and team regarding diagnoses, repair needs, parts, and any issues that require additional support.
  • Continue developing technical skills through company training, manufacturer resources, and hands‑on coaching.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What are the qualifications that we're looking for?

  • 2+ years' experience with hydraulic pumps, cylinders, valves, and hoses
  • 2+ years’ of MIG and stick welding experience
  • 3+ years’ of automotive electrical experience
  • 3+ years’ of diesel engine repair is preferred
  • Must have own tools
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
    • Class A or B CDL is a plus!
  • Possess working mechanical knowledge, including the use of hand tools, power tools, and measuring devices

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to frequently kneel, bend, squat, push, pull, and reach.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs. without assistance.
  • Must be able to get into and out of various vehicles without assistance.
  • Must pass a DOT physical including drug screening.

Communication Requirements:

  • This position requires the ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to safely perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Effective communication is necessary to understand and follow safety procedures and instructions, communicate with customers and team members, and complete required job-related documentation.
