Job summary

LYNX is seeking a Diesel Fleet Technician B to maintain Central Florida buses, diagnose problems, and perform preventative maintenance across engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, and electrical systems.

You will work with senior technicians on complex repairs, assist on road calls, and support safe fleet operations in a safety-sensitive environment.

Qualifications

  • Must have a High School diploma or GED plus three years in transit or heavy vehicle maintenance and one year of technical school or an equivalent combination.
  • Must possess and maintain a Florida Class B CDL with Passenger endorsement and Airbrakes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance and diagnose mechanical problems on transit buses and related equipment.
  • Service engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension and basic electrical systems; repair A/C components.
  • Complete field repairs on road failures, assist with vehicle recovery, and tow buses when needed.
  • Work with higher-grade technicians on complex repairs and adhere to safety policies.

Job Summary

Help keep Central Florida moving by maintaining the buses that serve our community. LYNX is seeking a Diesel Fleet Technician B also known as a Technician B to perform preventative maintenance, diagnose mechanical problems, and repair transit buses and related equipment. Responsibilities include servicing engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, basic electrical systems, and air conditioning components.

This position works alongside higher-level technicians on complex repairs and assists with road calls and vehicle recovery when needed. The successful candidate brings experience in transit or heavy vehicle maintenance, strong troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to safe, reliable fleet operations. This is a safety-sensitive position.

This position is considered safety-sensitive and subject to the provisions of the Substance Abuse Program Policy for Safety Sensitive Positions.

Essential Functions
  • Completes scheduled and non-scheduled maintenance on all systems and safety equipment on transit coaches for safe operations.
  • Carries out ordinary mechanical, hydraulic or structural maintenance repairs and adjustments.
  • Determines the source of trouble.
  • Repairs or replaces defective parts or makes changes as instructed.
  • Refers difficult or unusual problems to higher grade employees for guidance or repair.
  • Executes field repairs on road failures and tows buses if necessary.
  • Tunes and repairs on road failures and tows buses if necessary.
  • Repairs engines: replaces all major engine components including cylinder heads
  • Replaces transmission; replaces all external components.
  • Replaces engine/transmission assemblies and accessories.
  • Diagnoses and repairs air systems and components and relines brakes.
  • Repairs and replaces all steering and suspension components.
  • Performs basic electrical diagnoses and repairs on electrical systems; replaces components.
  • Performs major repairs, component replacement and Schedule “A” and “C” inspections on wheelchair lifts.
  • Performs minor repairs and replaces A/C components.
  • Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED plus three years’ experience in transit or heavy vehicle maintenance and one year of technical school; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Florida CDL permit/license, Class “B” with Passenger endorsement and Airbrakes.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, walk, stretch, kneel, and lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work days, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical and drug screen.
  • Ability to work in open bays, inside buses and outside in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to handle and use commercial cleaners and toxic materials to perform duties.
  • Ability to provide own tools.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor.
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with those encountered in the course of work using principles of excellent service.
Work Environment and Special Considerations
  • Employees in this position must comply with all requirements of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regarding the testing of safety sensitive employees. This position is considered safety-sensitive under FTA drug and alcohol regulations (49 CFR Part 655).
  • LYNX provides the community with much needed public transportation, and it is important for the Agency to resume its services as quickly and as safely as possible in the event of any natural, technological, or human‑caused emergency or disaster. This position is considered a mission critical member of LYNX’s emergency preparation and response efforts during an emergency or disaster and as such, requires 24-hour availability in the event of an emergency or disaster.
