Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s PennDOT is seeking Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee in Butler County. You’ll gain hands-on experience maintaining diesel engines and heavy machinery while supporting critical transportation infrastructure.

As a trainee you will learn maintenance, diagnostics, and safety practices, with daily hours 7:00 AM–3:00 PM, Monday–Friday, and potential travel or overtime based on needs. Salary starts at $48,802 annually for new state employees.

Qualifications

• Two years as a Tradesman Helper in automotive field or equivalent.
• Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum from an accredited trade or technical school.
• Equivalent combination of experience and training acceptable.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance on vehicles and machinery to support safe operation.
• Assist with repairs on engines, electrical systems, brakes, and other components.
• Identify mechanical issues using appropriate tools and methods for repairs.
• Follow safety procedures and maintain a clean, hazard-free work area.
• Document inspections, repairs, and observations in writing and verbally.
