Job summary

First Student in New Haven, CT is hiring a Diesel Technician to service a fleet of school buses and ensure safety and reliability for students each day. The role includes maintaining buses, performing diagnostics, and documenting work orders in a team-focused environment.

The position offers a Monday–Friday schedule (1:00 PM – 9:30 PM), union-based compensation at $38.13 per hour, and opportunities for ASE certification along with comprehensive benefits and training support.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of diesel, heavy-duty truck, bus, automotive maintenance or equivalent technical school experience preferred.
• Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
• Valid driver's license required.
• CDL Class B or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment (company-paid training provided).
• Must possess a professional mechanic's tool set.
• Willingness to participate in ASE certification program.
• Strong computer and documentation skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Ensure vehicles are maintained and safe for our passengers.
• Diagnose and perform all phases of vehicle maintenance and repair.
• Repair and inspect brakes, suspension systems, drivetrains, steering components, and transmissions.
• Perform engine diagnostics, tune-ups, and repairs.
• Complete preventative maintenance services (PMs).
• Conduct safety inspections and annual maintenance inspections.
• Accurately complete work orders and maintenance documentation.
• Assist with mobile emergency repair services as needed.
• Maintain compliance with company safety standards and regulatory requirements.
• Work collaboratively with fellow technicians and operational staff to maximize fleet readiness.
