Job description

Description

In collaboration with the multidisciplinary healthcare delivery team and under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Dialysis Technician will perform basic nursing care activities. They will maintain a safe, clean, and stocked patient care environment, assist staff members, and help direct patient flow.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
1 year experience in a pediatric healthcare setting (Preferred)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Knowledge of aseptic technique, basic calculations, human relations and interpersonal skills, non-judgmental behavior.

Required Licenses and Certifications
Basic Life Support (BLS), Patient Care Technician (CPCT), and a nationally recognized dialysis technician certification (1.5 years required).

Functional Accountabilities

Patient Care

  • Orient families to use of call lights, monitor and unit; perform vital signs, height, weight, and head circumference measurements.
  • Provide daily baths, skin and mouth care, peri-care, and apply skin creams as directed by RN.
  • Ensure proper nutrition as ordered; care for tube feeding and feeding of patients.
  • Recognize and report pain and skin breakdown.
  • Assist in performance of trach care, EVD, central line dressing, pin care, cast and traction care, and care for dying patients.
  • Collect cultures of urine and stool samples, etc.

Patient Care Support

  • Assist with patient flow and maintain a neat and orderly environment.
  • Assist with preparation of room for discharge and admission.
  • Set up monitors and alarms.
  • Obtain equipment and supplies and maintain PAR levels.
  • Prioritize tasks and special requests from RN.
  • Document on nursing database, flow sheets, and vital signs in a timely manner; notify charge nurse of appropriate findings.

Surveillance and Infection Control

  • Observe and alert RN when there are monitor deviations.
  • Follow monitor guidelines when assigned to monitor bank, dress code, and professionalism.
  • Care for isolation patients.
  • Adhere to hand washing protocols before and after patient contact.
  • Clean equipment after each use.

Staff Relations

  • Communicate effectively with RN and team members; report changes and participate in shift reports.
  • Maintain professional relationships with patients and families.
  • Resolve conflicts appropriately.
  • Communicate with RN on all patient care activities hourly.
  • Notify charge nurse when leaving and returning to the unit.
  • Participate in unit discussions and shared decision-making.

Conducts Self Responsibly

  • Follow all hospital/department policies and procedures.
  • Remain on unit during shift; notify staff when leaving for errands.
  • Use designated areas for breaks; leave patient care area at shift end with report given.
  • Attend in-services and staff meetings.

Dialysis Functions

  • Initiate, monitor, and terminate outpatient hemodialysis treatments per protocol.
  • Set up and prepare dialysis machine as prescribed.
  • Break down dialysis machine; ensure cleaning per policy.
  • Perform water checks and mix bleach as per policy.
  • Additional responsibilities as directed by Charge RN.
