General Description of the Job Class

Operation of sonographic equipment, perform and communicate results of diagnostic examinations using sonography.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic ultrasound examinations, including abdominal, vascular, small parts, ob-gyn, infant head/hip/spine, and interventional procedures.
  • Follow established departmental policies and use cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures based on anatomical, pathological, and diagnostic information.
  • Use independent judgment during exams to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Analyze sonograms, synthesize information, and communicate findings to the Radiologist.
  • Ensure patient safety and comfort during procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and healthcare team members, recognizing their needs.
  • Assist with daily ultrasound department operations, including exam tracking, billing, equipment maintenance, and supply management.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with coworkers, referring providers, and agencies.
  • Train ultrasound students during clinical rotations and provide instruction to new physicians, residents, and fellows.
  • Coordinate with staff to ensure appropriate patient care and report equipment issues.
  • Participate in maintaining laboratory accreditation and perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

Graduate or completion of a program meeting eligibility requirements for registry/certification, or currently holds required registry or certification.

Experience

None required beyond education/certification; Level I must obtain ARDMS certifications within 18 months; Level II requires at least 2 years' experience; Level III requires at least 4 years' experience in the specialty modality.

Licensure and Certification

ARDMS certification within 18 months of hire; BLS certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Proficient in ultrasound procedures, capable of providing guidance and training, and able to coordinate effectively with the team.
