Job summary

Duke PF is seeking a Sonographer in Durham, North Carolina, to perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations and communicate results effectively. You will operate sonographic equipment and ensure patient safety and comfort while in your care.

The ideal candidate will have a relevant educational background and must obtain ARDMS certification within 18 months of employment. A passion for patient care and teamwork is essential in this role.

Qualifications

  • Graduate or completion of program that meets eligibility requirements for registry/certification.
  • ARDMS certification within 18 months of hire.
  • Minimum two years’ experience for Level II, four years for Level III.

Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical assessment and diagnostic ultrasound examinations.
  • Analyze sonograms and communicate findings to the Radiologist.
  • Assist with the daily operations of the ultrasound department.

General Description of the Job Class

Operation of sonographic equipment, perform and communicate results of diagnostic examinations using sonography.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic ultrasound examinations.
  • Exams include abdominal, vascular, small parts, ob‑gyn, infant head/hip/spine, and interventional procedures.
  • Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
  • Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
  • Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the Radiologist.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer’s care.
  • Communicates effectively with the patient and the health care team, recognizing the special nature of sonographic examinations and patient’s needs.
  • Assists with the daily operations of the ultrasound department.
  • Completes exam tracking/billing accurately on a daily basis.
  • Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area, and maintains adequate supplies.
  • Establishes and maintains productive ethical working relationships with coworkers, referring providers and commercial agencies.
  • Performs other work‑related duties as assigned.
  • Assists in training of ultrasound students during clinical rotations.
  • Proficient in the performance of ultrasound procedures and does not require assistance from fellow sonographers.
  • Provides direction and instruction to existing personnel and training to new sonographers.
  • Assists in teaching of ultrasound technology to new physicians, residents, and fellows.
  • Coordinates with other staff to assure appropriate patient care is provided.
  • Reports equipment failures to the appropriate supervisor or staff member.
  • Participates in the maintenance of laboratory accreditation.
  • Performs other related duties incidental to the work herein.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
  • Graduate or completion of program that meets eligibility requirements for registry/certification or currently holds required registry or certification.
Experience
  • None required beyond above education/certification requirements.
  • Level I – Must obtain ARDMS certifications as required by each entity within 18 months of employment.
  • Level II – Minimum of two years’ experience as a Sonographer.
  • Level III – Minimum of four years’ experience within the specialty modality in which they are seeking promotion.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
  • ARDMS certification within 18 months of hire.
  • RDMS and RVT preferred.
  • BLS certification.
