General Description

Operation of sonographic equipment, perform and communicate results of diagnostic examinations using sonography.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic ultrasound examinations.
• Exams include abdominal, vascular, small parts, ob‑gyn, infant head/hip/spine, and interventional procedures.
• Follow established departmental policy.
• Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological findings.
• Uses independent judgment during the exam to accurately differentiate normal and pathologic findings.
• Analyzes sonograms and communicates findings to the Radiologist.
• Assumes responsibility for patient safety and comfort while in the sonographer’s care.
• Communicates effectively with patients and the healthcare team.
• Assists with daily operations of the ultrasound department.
• Completes exam tracking/billing accurately on a daily basis.
• Maintains ultrasound equipment, work area, and supplies.
• Establishes ethical working relationships with coworkers, providers, and agencies.
• Performs other work‑related duties as assigned.
• Assists in training of ultrasound students during clinical rotations.
• Provides direction and instruction to existing personnel and trains new sonographers.
• Assists in teaching ultrasound technology to physicians, residents, and fellows.
• Coordinates with other staff to assure proper patient care.
• Reports equipment failures to the supervisor.
• Participates in laboratory accreditation maintenance.
• Perform other related duties incidental to the work.

Required Qualifications

Education

• Graduate or completion of a program meeting eligibility requirements for registry/certification, or current holder of the required registry or certification.

Experience

• None required beyond above education/certification requirements.
• Level I – Must obtain ARDMS certifications within 18 months of employment.
• Level II – Minimum two years’ experience as a sonographer.
• Level III – Minimum four years’ experience within specialty modality seeking promotion.

Licensure and Certification

• ARDMS certification within 18 months of hire.
• RDMS and RVT preferred.
• BLS certification.
