Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Ultrasound)

Summary
Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) assignments at this level are above the full performance level, performing the full range of duties. Performs a wide variety of complex ultrasound (US) imaging examinations for FVAMC patients to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury.

Duties

  • Receives and reviews requests from physicians and other health care providers for US examinations of patients. Determines the condition(s) at issue and the best way to meet the needs of the individual case.
  • Receives and positions patient for examination. Explains procedures and actions to allay fears and secure maximum cooperation.
  • Sets up, adjusts and operates sonography equipment. Performs US exams including AAA screen, abdomen, aorta, bladder, breast, carotid, DVT, gallbladder, kidney, liver, pelvis, scrotum, spleen, thyroid, venous Doppler, renal and liver biopsies. Selects appropriate protocols, conducts examinations, adjusts techniques, and modifies procedures if anomalies are found. Monitors patient condition during examination, provides emergency aid if needed, and assists radiologist or physician in evaluating results.
  • Trains other personnel in US principles, procedures, and equipment. Develops ultrasound training plans, conducts hands-on training, and develops or adapts procedures for new techniques.
  • Performs operator-level maintenance and troubleshooting of US equipment. Assists in calibration, supplies imaging materials, and maintains quality control programs.
  • Maintains files and records related to ultrasound activities. Prepares reports on examinations, equipment status, workload, and supply usage.
  • Ensures correct transfer of images to the PACS system.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm.

Pay: Competitive salary with regular increases. Higher step rates may be considered based on qualifications.

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days annually, including leave, sick leave, and holidays. Credit for prior work or military service may apply.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Certified in general radiologic technology by ARRT (R). Advanced certification required for certain modalities.
  • Completion of a 24-month or equivalent accredited radiologic technology program.

Grade Level: GS-9, requiring one year of relevant experience and demonstrating advanced competencies.

Physical Requirements: As per VA standards.

Education: Accredited degrees or certificates recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education requires certification of equivalency.
