Summary
Technologists operate highly complex super-conductive Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) devices, which utilize strong magnetic fields and radio waves to acquire detailed images.
Qualifications Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable, in accordance with VA Policy.
- Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (R).
- Advanced ARRT certification is required for MRI duties, and for assignments including computed tomography (CT) or Mammography (M), performed independently.
- Education: Completion of a 24-month full-time training course or equivalent in a JRCERT-accredited radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree.
- Credentialing Standards: Must meet standards of the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981 and be certified as radiographers; failure to obtain or maintain certification may lead to removal from the occupation.
- Physical Requirements: Refer to VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
- English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as per 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Duties
- Report shortages and equipment failures; coordinate with service personnel for repairs.
- Follow safety practices on MRI equipment, report infractions, and unsafe conditions.
- Maintain courteous relationships with all organizational members and the public.
- Perform additional duties outside normal workstations as needed for training and coverage.
- Inform radiologists of urgent examinations; administer contrast agents under radiologist supervision.
- Set up and position patients, operate imaging equipment, and ensure proper safety and contamination procedures.
- Screen patients for MRI contraindications, coordinate with medical staff, and maintain inventory.
- Participate in safety training, maintain licensure, and adhere to medical and safety standards.
