Job Summary:
Under indirect supervision, performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations and produces two-dimensional ultrasonic recordings of internal organs used by physicians to diagnose disease processes and delineate normal and abnormal human anatomy, as well as pathological conditions. Areas of focus include the abdomen, superficial structures such as the breast and musculoskeletal system, pelvis, gravid uterus, and other parts of the body, including obstetrics (e.g., maternal uterus, Adnexa, fetal biophysical profile, amniocentesis) and interventional procedures such as biopsies, aspirations, and drainage procedures.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Upholds Kaiser Permanente's Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities, and applicable laws. Maintains professional behavior towards members and coworkers, creating a positive departmental image. Considers cultural diversity and lifestyle differences in patient care. Demonstrates understanding of patient development stages to tailor services appropriately.
- Operates diagnostic ultrasound equipment competently, including real-time and mobile devices, to obtain quality images. Prepares patients for examinations, explains procedures to reduce apprehension, and consults with physicians regarding medical history to determine appropriate tests.
- Selects transducers and adjusts controls based on the organ of interest and test specifications. Moves transducer over the area of interest, observes sound wave display, and evaluates image quality. Records test data and images accurately, discusses results with physicians, and ensures proper documentation.
- Performs special applications such as assisting in sterile procedures, surgeries, localizations, aspirations, and biopsies. Utilizes ancillary devices, scans regions of interest using various modes, and optimizes display parameters for diagnostic quality.
- Produces high-quality diagnostic images, considering technical factors, patient variables, artifacts, and equipment limitations. Maintains and documents clinical activity accurately and timely. Observes all relevant policies and maintains professional standards and effective communication. Keeps equipment and work areas in accordance with guidelines.
