Job summary

Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, ME is seeking a Diabetes Educator to support both in-patient and out-patient diabetes education, coordinating staff training and updating clinical education programs. The role requires an RN or RD license, BLS, and preferably CDE; at least three years in acute care, with strong communication and computer skills.

Qualifications

• Current and valid state RN or RD license/registration.
• Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
• Certified Diabetes Educator certification, Preferred. (If not a CDE, 15 hrs. of Continuing Education in Diabetes within 2 months of hire and 15 hours of Continuing Education every year until CDE obtained)
• A minimum of three (3) year’s experience in an acute care hospital environment.
• Excellent clinical, interpersonal and communication skills essential.
• Team approach to patient care.
• Working knowledge of computers and computer applications.
• Day and evening flexibility required.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Masters of Science in Nutrition preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the daily assessment of the needs of the in-patient and out-patient departments related to diabetes education.
• Coordinate, implement and evaluate specific diabetes education related to clinical nursing/staff functions.
• Ensure that all patient care nursing staff is oriented to the diabetes standards of care and the nursing scope of practice at the Medical Center.
• Act as a facilitator for learning new skills as well as updating current skills related to diabetes.
• Communicate with Directors and Supervisors regarding diabetes educational needs and participate in curriculum planning.
