Job summary

OpenTalent seeks a DevOps Engineer to join the VA.gov Platform Infrastructure Services Team, designing, building, and operating cloud infrastructure and deployment automation.

You will enable dozens of engineering teams to securely deliver digital services by providing scalable infrastructure, automated deployment pipelines, observability, and developer tooling. This role requires reliability and collaboration with security teams.

Qualifications

• U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required.
• Bachelor's Degree.
• 10+ years of experience as a DevOps Engineer.
• Hands-on AWS production experience.
• Experience deploying and operating Kubernetes (Amazon EKS or equivalent).
• Proficiency with Terraform (Terragrunt preferred).
• Experience building CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions/Jenkins or similar.
• Strong Linux systems administration and shell scripting.
• Knowledge of networking fundamentals, DNS, TLS, load balancing, and container networking.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes in production.
• Experience participating in production support and on-call rotations.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain cloud infrastructure for VA.gov Platform.
• Develop reusable infrastructure modules and automation across teams.
• Improve platform scalability, resiliency, and operational efficiency.
• Contribute to internal platform capabilities to enhance developer experience.
• Provision and manage cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/Terragrunt).
• Build and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Argo CD, Jenkins).
• Participate in business-hours support rotation and on-call responsibilities.
• Troubleshoot production infrastructure, Kubernetes clusters, deployments, and cloud services.
• Build infrastructure meeting security, availability, and performance requirements.
• Collaborate with security engineers to improve Platform security posture.

Position Title: DevOps Engineer Location: Remote (In the U.S)

POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a DevOps Engineer to join our team supporting VA.gov Platform's Infrastructure Services Team. In this role you will be responsible for designing, building, and operating the cloud infrastructure, deployment automation, and platform services that power VA.gov. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about enabling dozens of engineering teams to securely deliver digital services to millions of Veterans by providing scalable infrastructure, automated deployment pipelines, observability, and developer tooling.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design, build, and maintain cloud infrastructure supporting VA.gov Platform
• Develop reusable infrastructure modules, libraries, and automation that can be leveraged across multiple engineering teams
• Improve platform scalability, resiliency, reliability, and operational efficiency
• Contribute to internal platform capabilities that improve the overall developer experience
• Provision and manage cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/Terragrunt)
• Build and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Argo CD, Jenkins, or similar technologies
• Participate in business-hours support rotation and production on-call responsibilities
• Troubleshoot production infrastructure, Kubernetes clusters, deployment failures, and cloud services
• Build infrastructure that meets security, availability, and performance requirements
• Collaborate with security engineers to continuously improve Platform's security posture

QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
• Bachelor's Degree
• 10 years' experience as a DevOps Engineer
• Hands-on production experience with AWS as a primary cloud provider
• Experience deploying and operating Kubernetes (Amazon EKS or equivalent)
• Strong proficiency with Terraform (Terragrunt preferred)
• Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar platforms
• Strong Linux systems administration and shell scripting experience
• Working knowledge of networking fundamentals, DNS, TLS, load balancing, reverse proxies, and container networking
• Experience with containerization technologies including Docker and Kubernetes
• Experience troubleshooting production infrastructure and distributed systems
• Experience participating in production support and on-call rotations
• Ability to work effectively with engineering teams and government stakeholders
