Job summary

General Atomics in San Diego, CA seeks a DevOps Engineer to bridge software and SysOps, ensuring efficient, secure scientific workloads. You will own Proxmox VE, implement IaC with Ansible, and drive patching and rapid response for critical vulnerabilities.

The role requires real-time Linux experience, strong scripting, and CI/CD expertise, operating in a regulated, research-focused environment. This is a full-time, on-site position with a mission to support fusion research initiatives.

Qualifications

• Typically requires a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field and nine years of related experience.
• Experience with system administration in various OS environments and real-time Linux for low-latency, deterministic scientific apps.
• Strong knowledge of Ansible for IaC deployment and automated patch compliance.
• Deep expertise in Docker to build, manage, and troubleshoot reproducible environments.
• Experience architecting, managing, and scaling Proxmox VE high-availability clusters.
• Familiarity with CI tools (Jenkins, Travis CI, CircleCI) and source control (Git, SVN).
• Proficiency in Bash, Python, and JavaScript.
• Experience in regulated federal or research environments with DOE/NIST cybersecurity and ATO.
• Understanding of software development lifecycle and strong communication/documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Hardware-to-Software Optimization: bridge PCS developers and infrastructure, translating control algorithms into optimized configurations.
• Virtualization Management: own the Proxmox VE cluster to deploy, manage, and scale environments.
• Infrastructure-as-Code Templating: collaborate to automate deployments with Ansible templates.
• Patch Management Lifecycle: manage end-to-end patching using Red Hat Satellite or Foreman.
• Security & Rapid Response: drive monitoring and rapid deployments to meet SOC/DOE requirements.
• CI/CD Pipeline Administration: manage pipelines to ensure reliable builds and deployments.
