Job summary

Development Project Manager

About the Organization:

Founded in 1911, the St. Louis Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired (SLSBVI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving the needs of adults with vision loss. SLSBVI’s programs include low vision assessment, occupational therapy, orientation and mobility instruction, vision aids, assistive technology training, transportation, peer and support groups, and recreational activities.

Mission – The St. Louis Society of the Blind and Visually Impaired enhances independence, empowers individuals, and enriches the lives of people who are visually impaired or blind.

Role Overview:

The Development Project Manager supports the mission of SLSBVI as a member of the fundraising staff with responsibility for the agency’s grant cycle, annual giving appeals, and assistance with special events. The Development Project Manager reports to the Director of Development and will also work closely with the President and C.E.O., Administrative and Data Management Assistant, Director of Adult Programs, Accountant, and Bookkeeper.

Principal Accountabilities:
Grant Cycle Management (50%)
  • Research prospective funding sources (private foundations, corporate giving, public agencies) that are aligned with SLSBVI’s mission and maintain comprehensive list of prospects’ funding interests, methods of approach for funding, timelines and contacts. Actively grow institutional donor portfolio.
  • Gather information to accurately define program/project, objectives, and budget. Write, edit and submit persuasive, well-researched letters of inquiry and funding proposals.
  • Maintain a comprehensive grants calendar to track deadlines for proposal submission and reporting. Coordinate with Director of Development to maintain accurate information in the donor information system and department records.
  • Prepare grant acknowledgements and reporting; coordinate related stewardship activities. Partner with SLSBVI program staff to collect required data and other information needed for grant reports.
Annual Giving Appeals (30%):
  • Draft annual giving appeals that are conducted via direct mail, digital communications, and special gift proposals.
  • Coordinate gift outreach and acknowledgement communications.
  • Develop and maintain prospect lists for agency leadership’s cultivation of current and potential donors.
  • Prepare monthly gift activity reports.
Special Events (20%):
  • Assist the Director of Development with the agency’s annual gala, inclusive of providing technical support to event committee members, follow-up with sponsors and auction item donors, preparation of event materials, and coordination of site logistics.
  • Coordinate opportunities and details for client events that are funded through grants and private donations.
  • Represent SLSBVI at client and other community events.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Experience: Minimum of three years professional, nonprofit sector experience focused in fund development and inclusive of grant writing responsibilities
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience working with donor information systems/databases and grant application portals
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, analytical ability, and attention to detail
  • Experience managing confidential information with discretion and in accordance with regulatory standards
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities efficiently and accurately with a high degree of professionalism, teamwork, integrity, loyalty and service to the organization
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally as needed
Working Conditions:
  • Full-time position (37.5 hours/week, Monday through Friday) onsite at SLSBVI office in Brentwood, Missouri, with occasional evenings or weekends for offsite events
  • Frequent computer screen work
  • Extended periods of sitting; frequent walking indoors/outdoors
  • Occasionally lift/transport items (1-20 lbs.)
