Job summary

Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) seeks a Software Engineer for the Applied Software Group in San Francisco to own and improve our internal developer platform and tooling. You will collaborate with investing and operations teams to accelerate internal workflows.

This role requires 3+ years of software engineering experience with Python 3 or Rust, cloud deployment, containers, CI/CD, and IaC. You will work across production environments with a hybrid in-office schedule (2-3 days per week) in SF.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proficiency in Python 3, Rust or similar backend languages and willingness to learn new technologies.
• Track record of defining and shipping developer platforms or internal tooling that measurably improved engineering velocity.
• Experience deploying services on at least one major cloud platform (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
• Experience with containerized services (Docker) and Kubernetes is a plus.
• Exposure to CI/CD systems (GitHub Actions, Cloud Build, CircleCI, or similar).
• Experience with production SQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL); NoSQL experience (e.g., Elasticsearch) is a plus.
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code concepts (Terraform, Pulumi, or similar) is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to and help improve the internal developer platform and tooling.
• Collaborate with a diverse user base to understand use-cases and reduce friction in workflows.
• Build and maintain shared tooling, templates, and libraries accelerating development.
• Support observability, monitoring, and alerting for self-service operations.
• Write and maintain developer documentation, onboarding guides, and runbooks.
• Own assigned projects from development through production support with increasing autonomy.
• Ensure security and compliance requirements are met in workflows.
